Stuart Armstrong has been forced to withdraw from the Scotland squad to take on Georgia and Germany due to injury.

The Celtic midfielder was in contention to win his first cap for his country in the upcoming European Qualifiers but missed his side's 3-1 win over St Johnstone at the weekend with a back injury.

Ipswich Town's Christophe Berra has also withdrawn from Gordon Strachan's squad and could be out of action for a month after suffering a hamstring injury in training.

A tweet from the Scottish FA on Twitter said: " @StuArmstrong16 and @Cberra1985 have withdrawn from the Scotland squad for #GEOSCO and #SCOGER through injury."

Scotland play Georgia in Tbilisi on September 4 before welcoming world champions Germany to Hampden three days later.

They sit third in Group D, three points behind leaders Poland and just two behind Germany.

On Armstrong, Strachan had previously said: "I have been impressed for a while because about two years ago he was in a squad. It's not like he has just come on the radar, he has always been on the radar.

"It shouldn't be a big surprise to anyone because he has been doing well at a high level. He looks comfortable at the level he is playing in and he is becoming a major figure in games."
