Columbus Crew will face Portland Timbers in the MLS Cup final after advancing with a 2-1 aggregate victory against New York Red Bulls.

The Red Bulls went into the second leg with a two-goal deficit against a side they ended the regular season seven points ahead of and although they came out on top 1-0, it wasn't enough to progress having lost the first leg 2-0.

However, Columbus were made to sweat late on once Anatole Abang turned the ball home three minutes into second-half injury time.

New York poured forward in search of an equaliser and thought they had it when Bradley Wright-Phillips' header drifted towards goal, only for his scruffy effort to rebound off the post.

That was the home side's last chance as the Crew held on to claim the Eastern Conference Championship and book their place in the MLS Cup for the first time since 2008.

They will face Portland next Sunday, who who won 5-3 on aggregate earlier on Sunday with a 2-2 draw at FC Dallas.

Dallas boasted a league-best 13 home wins at Toyota Stadium during the regular season but in Portland - 3-1 winners in the first leg - they were facing a team that had not lost on the road since the end of August.

After a scoreless first half, Dallas' task got even tougher when Portland striker Adi scored in the 54th minute to stretch the Timbers' advantage.

Needing to score at least three, Dallas responded with goals from Ryan Hollingshead in the 68th minute and Blas Perez five minutes later.

The home side pushed for a third to take the tie to extra time but could not find the breakthrough and instead Portland's Lucas Melano sealed his side's progress with a goal five minutes into stoppage-time.
