LA Galaxy's Nigel de Jong committed a nasty looking challenge on Portland midfielder Darlington Nagbe.

The former Manchester City and AC Milan midfielder, who plays LA Galaxy, infamously caused headlines for his karate-kick style challenge on Xabi Alonso in the 2010 World Cup final.

The Netherlands international has caused a stir once more after a heavy challenge on Nagbe during their 1-1 draw on Sunday night.

Nagbe was stretchered off after the challenge and left the stadium after the game in a wheelchair, but it is not yet known how long he will be out for.

"It was a 50-50 ball," De Jong said  after the game. "Normally, I always have those balls. I went over to the ball and catch the ball a little bit and catch most of his ankle. It was a pity, you know what I mean? It was never my intention to hurt him."

Former Bolton midfielder Stuart Holden, who suffered a broken leg from a De Jong challenge during an international friendly in March 2010, said he felt ill by the tackle.

"It makes me feel sick," he added. "I know what Darlington Nagbe is going through. We saw him sitting there. He had the towel over his head. We saw his body mannerism and that's a man that knows he's done something serious.

"I don't want to speculate what it is, but I know it's not good. And De Jong did go over and apologise, but there is absolutely no excuse for that type of challenge.

"We don't need it in the game. It's horrific. It's horrible and he's going to get retroactive punishment."
