Brad Evans scored a penalty and was then sent off as Seattle Sounders beat the Vancouver Whitecaps 2-1 in MLS on Sunday.
Sounders are fifth in the Western Conference while the Whitecaps are out of play-off contention.
Pedro Morales put Whitecaps ahead with a 35th-minute penalty, but Osvaldo Alonso replied before half-time.
Morales was sent off in the 53rd minute for an elbow to the head and Evans was dismissed late in the game for an apparent headbutt after scoring a match-winning penalty.
Montreal Impact boosted their play-off hopes with a 1-0 victory over Orlando City.
Despite out-shooting the Impact 24-4, Orlando City saw their winless streak extended to five games and were eliminated from MLS Cup play-off contention.
The Impact are not assured of a berth, but with the win they jumped over the Philadelphia Union and DC United into fourth place in the Eastern Conference.
Dominic Oduro made it happen with a superb solo effort in the 56th minute, and Montreal goalkeeper Evan Bush and the defence made it hold up.
Bush's saves included a leaping poke to push a dangerous Cyle Larin header over the crossbar in the 88th minute.
