Toronto FC goalkeeper Alex Bono produced one of the saves of the MLS season to deny Cyle Larin as Orlando City tasted defeat for only the second time this term.
Eastern Conference leaders Orlando travelled to Toronto looking for a fifth consecutive victory to strengthen their claim for a play-off spot.
But they got off to a nightmare start at BMO Field as a first-half double from Sebastian Giovinco saw the hosts race ahead inside 38 minutes.
Former AC Milan and Real Madrid star Kaka pulled a goal back in first-half stoppage-time to breathe life into City's hopes of getting a result.
The visitors were presented with their best chance to restore parity shortly before the hour when Carlos Rivas' cross fell perfectly for Larin in the area.
The Canadian drew Bono into a reflex save before the ball rebounded perfectly into the Orlando striker's path, setting up what appeared to be the simplest of finishes.
But Bono had other ideas, launching himself across to make an impossible save and securing Toronto all three points.
