Raheem Sterling can still be key for England at Euro 2016, says Phil Thompson

Phil Thompson believes Raheem Sterling still has an important role to play in England's Euro 2016 campaign, despite being dropped following criticism.

Sterling was criticised for his performance in England's opening draw with Russia and endured another difficult afternoon against Wales, being substituted at half-time and then demoted to the bench against Slovakia.

But Liverpool legend Thommo feels that the Manchester City winger can still be an effective weapon for England in the later stages of the tournament.

Speaking to Sky Sports about the former Liverpool player, he said: "I can't see him being recalled to the starting line-up but he could now become a really dangerous impact player for us.

"If you're a full-back having played 70 minutes in the middle of the summer in France then you do not want to see Raheem Sterling, with the pace he has, coming off the bench."

The Soccer Saturday pundit believes that a lack of confidence has been the key to Sterling's continued struggles with country as well as club.

He added: "I think his form was very sketchy coming into the tournament and there was even talk of him not even making the squad, with some suggesting Andros Townsend was a better option.

"Roy is a loyal manager and went with the player that helped get England here but Sterling hasn't felt the same faith from the fans.

"I thought he did okay in the opening game but his end product was lacking. Then is the second game he missed the early chance and then I think he felt the unease of the supporters whenever he made a mistake.

"I know from his Liverpool days that he thrives on confidence and, even though it was a difficult one to make, it was the right decision to take him out of the firing line."
