St Johnstone manager Tommy Wright says he was flattered by the interest from Dundee United but a new deal at the club was always on the cards.

St Johnstone manager Tommy Wright has signed an extension to his current contract which ties him to the club until June 2019.

The 52-year-old has been handed the new deal by Saints after they were approached by Dundee United last week, requesting permission to speak with Wright about their managerial vacancy.

St Johnstone chairman Steve Brown insisted at the time that United would have no joy in pursuing Wright and he has now demonstrated his commitment to the Perth-based club.

Wright said: "Of course, I'm delighted to have extended my contract. I am enjoying my time at the club, and I do feel there's still a lot to be done and a lot to be achieved.

"When I look at the squad of players, I realise how well we've done to assemble such a strong team and that with them we can achieve more success together.

"I would like to thank the chairman and the club for their continued support."

The Northern Irishman replaced Steve Lomas as manager at McDiarmid Park in June 2013 and has been in charge during the most successful period in the club's history.
