Where are England international players born?

The north of England has produced more than twice the number of England internationals as the south since the country's first official match against Scotland in 1872.

Sky Sports looked at the birthplaces of all 1,217 players to have represented England and found 806 have been born in the northern regions, compared to 367 in the south.

Thirty-eight players were born outside England, while the origins of six others could not be verified.

England is traditionally split into nine regions and we divided them into five northern regions and four southern regions for the purposes of the study.

The data shows the North West has produced 278 England internationals, making it the most successful region.

The other northern regions are West Midlands (159), the North East (144), Yorkshire and the Humber (118) and East Midlands (107).

In the south, London has provided 189 internationals, followed by the South East (93), East of England (48) and the South West (37), which has produced one fewer England international than those born outside England.

Other countries

Sky Sports pundit Matt Le Tissier (Guernsey) and Graeme Le Saux (Jersey) were born in the Channel Islands, which are not part of England.

One Scottish-born player has represented England - John Bain made his sole appearance against his native country in 1877.

Two Wrexham-born Welshmen have also pulled on the England shirt, most recently Liverpool defender Rob Jones, who made eight appearances for England between 1992 and 1996, while Fred Green made his only appearance against Scotland in 1876.

Jamaica-born Manchester City winger Raheem Sterling is the only current England player to have been born outside the UK.

The only other capped England player born outside the UK and still playing is Ivory Coast-born Crystal Palace winger Wilfried Zaha, who earned his first cap for England in 2012.

Other England players born outside the UK include Sky Sports pundit John Salako (Nigeria), Owen Hargreaves (Canada), John Barnes (Jamaica), Cyrille Regis (French Guiana), Brian Stein (South Africa), Tony Dorigo (Australia), Luther Blissett (Jamaica) and Terry Butcher (Singapore).

England's youngest recent debutant was Wythenshawe-born Manchester United striker Marcus Rashford. He took the honour from Milton Keynes-born Spurs midfielder Dele Alli, who appears to have become the first player born in Buckinghamshire to wear an England shirt since the 1800s, following Reverend Walter Gilliat (only cap in 1893) and Alf Milward (last cap in 1897).

In terms of England's nine centurions, it's 5-4 to the north, with Leicester-born Peter Shilton leading the way with 125 caps between 1970 and 1990.
