Luke Shaw has joined a long list of England players sidelined with injury.
It's a painful blow for Shaw, United boss Louis van Gaal and also England manager Roy Hodgson - who is without a number of key players as he makes plans for next summer's Euro 2016.
Shaw featured in England's recent qualifiers against San Marino and Switzerland, in which they booked their spot at the France finals, but Hodgson will now have to look at other options at left-back over the coming months.
Here are other important players currently unavailable to the England boss…
Jack Wilshere
The Arsenal midfielder has been dogged by injuries in recent years and his latest setback has seen him require surgery on a hairline fracture in his left fibula. The operation is expected to keep Wilshere out of action for around three months.
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is optimistic Wilshere can get back to his best later this season. "We are still at the start of the season. We are now mid-September, so after three months - mid-December - he can be back," he said. "There is still a long way to play after."
Danny Welbeck
Wenger and Hodgson are also without striker Welbeck, who has not played since the end of April due to a knee problem. The forward - who has scored six goals in Euro 2016 qualifying - is expected to be out until at least Christmas after undergoing surgery last month.
"His condition had not evolved as well as we thought," Wenger said, when it emerged Welbeck would be out for a prolonged period.
Jordan Henderson
Liverpool captain Henderson flew to USA to receive further treatment on a troublesome heel injury. However, no return date has been set for the midfielder, who hasn't played since Liverpool's 1-0 win over Bournemouth on August 17.
"He's had a problem with the bottom of his foot," Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers said after substituting Henderson in that fixture. "He'd done ever so well to even be out on the field. He wanted to give it a go but you could see he was limited in his running. Unfortunately for him, he was just in too much pain."
Daniel Sturridge
Sturridge has been a long-term absentee for Liverpool and is yet to play this season after having a hip operation in May. However, the striker is nearing a return to competitive action after joining full training last week.
"There is no timeline as to when he will be fit to participate in the game but he is obviously back in training, which is good," said Rodgers. "He looked really sharp in training, probably the best he's looked fitness-wise for 18 months, and it will be really good when he gets back."
Adam Lallana
Another Liverpool player who missed England's Euro 2016 qualifying double-header earlier this month was Lallana. Like Henderson, the former Southampton man has also been absent since the win over Bournemouth and is still recovering from a thigh injury.
Lallana could potentially return for Liverpool's home game with Norwich this weekend.
Fraser Forster
Forster is a long-term absentee, following his patella tendon injury in March. The goalkeeper is not expected to return until 2016 after an extensive period of rehabilitation.
"Fraser is an outstanding goalkeeper and has been a huge part of our success," Southampton executive director of football, Les Reed, said at the time of the injury. "While this is a challenging situation, we look forward to him returning to action as soon as he is fully fit. I am sure he will go on to make a significant number of appearances for Southampton and for England, and will get the best support available to help him recover to do so."
Ben Foster
West Brom goalkeeper Foster damaged his anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee in March - but is optimistic about an October return after seven months out.
Hodgson made contact with both Foster and Forster when they were injured in March which suggests they remain in his long-term plans. Jack Butland and Tom Heaton have deputised as Joe Hart's understudies recently.
