Jamie Redknapp says Aston Villa need nine wins in 21 games to stand a chance of Premier League survival.

Villa could only draw 1-1 at Newcastle on Saturday Night Football, and are still without a win since the opening day of the season.

They sit bottom of the Premier League, 10 points adrift of 17th place, and Redknapp says three points were desperately needed at St James' Park.

Aston Villa remain bottom despite fighting back for a point

He said: "They've only won six games in 2015. They've now got seven points, so they've got to find 30 points from 21 games.

"That's going to be really difficult. It looks like they're going to need nine wins, and you look at that side and think are they capable of winning [nine] times? Not at the moment.

"They've got to get some form. A point away from home? It may look like a good point, but they need three points.

"They need to go and do what Bournemouth have done, go and win three games on the spin. If they can do that it's a different conversation."

Aston Villa boss Remi Garde was 'very happy' with the way his side battled back to get a draw

But Redknapp, speaking on Saturday Night Football, fears the players available to the Premier League's basement side may not be the type they need in a relegation battle.

"They need more quality, they need someone who can help Rudy Gestede and be a focal point for the team.

"The difficulty is you are going to be attracting players and they're going to be staring relegation in the face.

Redknapp and Ray Wilkins analyse the impact Aston Villa striker Rudy Gestede had coming off the bench

"Are they going to be the characters you want? Are they coming for the fight or are they coming for the money?

"There may be some thinking they'll just come and get an exit relegation clause so they can go back to the Premier League. They might be attracting mercenaries, to a certain extent."
