As part of our pundit picks, Jamie Redknapp remembers one of the most famous nights under the lights at Anfield.
Liverpool 4-3 Newcastle – April 3, 1996
A faltering Newcastle side arrived on Merseyside three points adrift of league leaders Manchester United but despite having two games in hand, Kevin Keegan’s side had lost three of their last five games and squandered a 12-point lead at the summit.
But under the lights of Anfield, both sides conjured up a seven-goal thriller which is widely regarded as the greatest match in Premier League history. Robbie Fowler gave the hosts the lead after just two minutes, converting a Stan Collymore cross to notch his 27th goal of the season only for Les Ferdinand to hit back just eight minutes later.
Newcastle took the lead for the first time in the 14th minute courtesy of David Ginola but Liverpool responded again 10 minutes after the break through Fowler. It was a lead which would last barely two minutes, as Colombian striker Faustino Asprilla latched on to Rob Lee’s through ball to make it 3-2 but the goal fest continued when Collymore levelled things up in the 68th minute after firing past Pavel Srníček.
The drama wasn’t over there though, as in the second minute of stoppage time John Barnes and Ian Rush combined for the former to find Collymore in space and he scored the seventh goal of a thrilling encounter to send the Kop into raptures and leave Kevin Keegan slumped over the advertising hoardings in disbelief.

“Probably the greatest ever Premier League moment, the 4-3 against Newcastle.
“When I look back now, just seeing Kevin Keegan sprawled across the advertising hoardings. I think he was a beaten man after that.
“Incredible game. Newcastle took the lead, we came back, Newcastle took the lead, we came back.
“It had everything and in that last minute, I think it was Barnes to Rush, to Barnes, to Rush, to Collymore.
“I think it shows you what the Premier League is all about.”
