Craig Bellamy has held talks with Oxford United and could be confirmed as their new manager in the next week, Sky Sports News understands.

The former Wales striker, part of Neil Warnock's coaching staff at Cardiff, has held a series of discussions with the League One club over the last fortnight and looks set to replace Pep Clotet, sacked at the end of last month.

The 38-year old, who won 78 caps for his country, could be confirmed in time to be in the dugout for Saturday's match at Northampton Town.

Speaking after watching his Cardiff side beat Ipswich 1-0 on Wednesday night, Warnock said it would be a "good appointment".

Craig Bellamy has the attributes to succeed in management, says Cardiff boss Neil Warnock with his assistant in talks over a move to Oxford

"He's got all the attributes," Warnock told Sky Sports News. "He's been coaching a while and he was disappointed not to get the Wales job.

"It's great. Players going to lower division clubs is fantastic. You have to learn the job. You can't just go into a job and expect it. I think he'll do well."

Bellamy started his playing career at Norwich before moves to Coventry and Newcastle. He then won the Scottish Cup during a loan spell at Celtic in 2005.

He then enjoyed spells with Blackburn Rovers, Liverpool, West Ham and Manchester City before moving to Cardiff on loan.

He returned to Liverpool for a second spell and won the League Cup in 2012 before a move back to Cardiff where he helped the side win the Championship in 2013, before announcing his retirement a year later.

Oxford are currently 15th in League One and five points above the relegation zone.
