Team of Euro 2016: Danny Higginbotham picks his star players

Portugal take on France in the Euro 2016 final on Sunday

Euro 2016 is over, but who would you pick in your team of the tournament?

We asked Sky Sports pundit Danny Higginbotham to select a best XI of stand-out performers from the last month in France.

His choices featured three Germans, three Frenchmen, two Italians and three players from the eventual champions Portugal - but no British players made his team despite Wales' run to the semi-finals.

Here's the team he chose, plus his justification for the selections…

Hugo Lloris has been the captain and leader back there with France and was unfortunate not to win the tournament.

The two full-backs Joshua Kimmich and Jonas Hector give fantastic width going forward. Kimmich is only 21 and was a midfielder but now plays at right-back, while Hector didn't turn professional until he was 20.

At centre-back, Leonardo Bonucci and Giorgio Chiellini have got so much know-how. Italy only conceded two goals at the tournament.

I've tried to balance it up in midfield with Toni Kroos and Renato Sanches, who was voted Young Player of Euro 2016. He'll give you drive and energy going forward, whereas Kroos will collect the ball from the centre-backs and protect them.

Nani has been playing up front but I couldn't leave him out of the team so I am playing him in behind the strikers. When he is on his game there's not many players better than him. He showed when Ronaldo went off injured in the final what he is capable of.

Antoine Griezmann is in as a No 10, which is where France ended up playing him, as he does with Atletico Madrid. He does so much work for the centre-forward and linked up really well with Olivier Giroud.

Dimitri Payet slowed down a little bit towards the end of the tournament, but I thought he had flashes of brilliance.

For me, Cristiano Ronaldo helped take a team that was unfancied to the final. I think he has to be in there.
