Owen Coyle has told Sky Sports News that it was Ross County chairman Roy MacGregor who sold him on the job at Victoria Park.

Coyle has succeeded Jim McIntyre in Dingwall on a two-year contract.

The club sacked McIntyre on Monday after a poor start to the season where they won one of their opening seven fixtures, leaving them third-bottom in the Scottish Premiership table.

Owen Coyle says that his relationship with County chairman Roy MacGregor will be key to success in Dingwall

Coyle will start with immediate effect with Sandy Stewart, who has worked with Coyle for 10 years, coming on board as assistant manager.

The 51-year-old Coyle, who had a three-month loan spell at Ross County during his playing days, has been without a job since he was sacked by Blackburn Rovers in February.

He told Sky Sports News: "The chairman Roy MacGregor rang me on Monday afternoon and asked me if the job would be of interest to me. It's obviously a club I know well having had a spell on loan here many years ago (2000).

"The club has come on leaps and bounds since that time, the infrastructure and the training ground is of a very high standard and having had chat with the chairman I felt it was the right job for me.

"I've said before when you have a good relationship and understanding with the chairman than that for me is the basis for bringing success to the football club and that's what we will be looking to foster here.

"It's wonderful club with some tremendous people behind the scenes and I can't wait to get started."

Coyle led Burnley to promotion to Premier League in 2009. He has also previously managed Bolton Wanderers, Houston Dynamo and Wigan Athletic as well as Scottish sides St Johnstone and Falkirk.

MacGregor is confident that he has got the man to get the club back on track - and to get the supporters off their feet at Victoria Park.

He said: "His (Coyle's) enthusiasm is huge and he has values and beliefs. He has always had his best results when he has got on well with leaders of football clubs.

"His difficulties at Wigan and Blackburn came when the owners were not about or there were other challenges. At the likes of Burnley, he has done really well as he did with Falkirk and St Johnstone.

"Home form is important for a team from this part of the world given the cost of being an away supporter. It is important to any team, but here it is critical."

Ross County travel to Kilmarnock on Saturday for Coyle's first game in charge.
