Russ Wilcox has been sacked by York City following the club's 3-1 defeat to Wimbledon on Saturday.

Willcox, 51, was appointed as manager at Bootham Crescent last October and successfully guided the club to League Two survival.

However, The Minstermen have started this season poorly and are now fourth bottom of the division, having won just two of their opening 15 matches.

York announced Wilcox's sacking, along with that of his assistant John Schofield, on the club's website on Monday morning.

"Russ joined York City in October 2014 and successfully achieved the board of directors' target of securing League Two status at the end of last season, finishing 11 points clear of the relegation zone," read the statement.

"Sadly, however, due to the team only attaining 12 points so far this season, the board felt they had to make a managerial change in order to give the club the best chance of necessary progress in the league."

"The Board of Directors would like to thank Russ for his hard work, commitment and endeavour during his time as York City manager," added York City Chairman, Jason McGill.

"The Board would also like to thank John Schofield for his hard work and enthusiasm on the training ground. Like Russ, he has also shown a high level of commitment to the Club during his time here.

"Everyone at York City Football Club wishes both Russ and John the very best for the future."
