Steven Pressley has been named as the new manager of Fleetwood Town.

The former Scotland defender was most recently manager of Coventry City but was sacked by the club in February.

By coincidence, his first match in charge of the Cod Army is set to be against Coventry at Highbury on Saturday, although Fleetwood are in action against Shrewsbury in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy on Tuesday.

Pressley takes over a Fleetwood side who have struggled so far this season and are just one place off the bottom of Sky Bet League One with only nine points from 11 matches - he will be assisted by Neil MacFarlane.

That poor start led to the sacking of Graham Alexander as manager following the 5-1 defeat at Gillingham on September 29.

Pressley, 41, played for Rangers, Coventry, Dundee United, Hearts, Celtic and Randers of Denmark before ending his playing career at Falkirk where he also had his first managerial job, taking charge in February 2010.

He moved on to Coventry in March 2013 and had 100 league games in charge before being shown the door and he has since been working as a scout for Southampton.

Chairman Andy Pilley said: "I am really pleased with the appointment. Steven has done an excellent job in incredibly difficult circumstances at the two football clubs he has been at before.

"We truly believe given the stability, the continuality and the facilities we have at Fleetwood Town, we have all ingredients to supply any manager with a great opportunity and we think Steven will be a great success.

"There were various standards and attributes that we were looking for. We spoke to a lot of people in football and the feedback was consistent.

"Steven is very hard working, he is intelligent and he has his own ideas how the game should be played which appeals to myself personally and the other senior management within the club.

"We want to play an exciting style of football that will entertain the public. It is a matter of fact that Steven has done very well at clubs in difficult situations. We are convinced he will do very well at Fleetwood Town given everything that we have to offer him."
