Arsenal missed a chance to close the gap on FA Women's Super League 1 leaders Manchester City as they were held to a goalless draw by Birmingham City.

The visitors had the better of the first half at Boreham Wood, with former Arsenal player Freda Ayisi causing problems to the hosts' defence with her pace and strength.

She had a couple of long-range efforts that went off target, before the best chance of the half fell to Birmingham's Remi Allen on the stroke of half-time.

The midfielder got on the end of a Melissa Lawley cross, but could only guide her effort onto the bar from six yards before Casey Stoney was able to scramble the ball clear.

It took Arsenal until the hour mark to force a save from Birmingham goalkeeper Sophie Baggaley, when Dan Carter had a volley well saved.

However, the visitors created the best chance of the match just 10 minutes later when Lawley got to the byline, but was unable to pull it back to Allen in the six-yard box with the goal gaping.
