Southampton 2016/17 season preview: Five questions

Claude Puel is the new Southampton manager for the 2016/17 season

As we preview the new Premier League season, we pick out five questions for Southampton.

What've they done in the transfer market?

Southampton's summer plans were disrupted by Ronald Koeman's protracted move to Everton, but they still clinched an £11m deal to sign winger Nathan Redmond from Norwich, and Claude Puel has also brought in £12.8m midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg from Bayern Munich and £4m goalkeeper Alex McCarthy from Crystal Palace.

But it wouldn't be a Southampton summer without some big-name departures. Victor Wanyama joined Tottenham for £11m and Sadio Mane headed to Liverpool for £36m, and the Saints also banked £12m from Graziano Pelle's move to China. There is money to spend, so don't rule out more new arrivals at St Mary's.

What does the manager say?

"I hope that it's a possibility in the future for Southampton to play in the Champions League, but it's important to improve with these players. They know the high level with the Europa League and I hope with the Champions League for the future."

"Southampton are a steady club and I think they'll be able to cope with the loss of Sadio Mane. There's a fairly clear top seven in the Premier League and they'll be right near the top of the "other league." - Paul Merson

What's your prediction?

Can Southampton do a Leicester? They are 200/1 to lift the Premier League title with Sky Bet, and 14/1 to finish in the top four. At the other end of the spectrum, the Saints are 18/1 for relegation. Their best bet for Premier League top goalscorer is Charlie Austin at 50/1.
