Jamie Carragher said it was "one of those days" for Liverpool after they were held to a goalless draw by Southampton on Saturday.

The visitors were largely dominant at St Mary's and Roberto Firmino, Joel Matip and Nathaniel Clyne all went close in the second half.

But Liverpool could not take their chances and the draw means they are joined at the top of the Premier League by Manchester City and could be leapfrogged by Chelsea if they beat Middlesbrough on Nissan Super Sunday.

"For one of the first times this season there was a lack of quality in front of goal," said former Liverpool defender Carragher. "Firmino's was the standout chance, Matip could have done more - maybe been a bit braver from a fantastic [Philippe] Coutinho cross - and then Clyne at the back post.

"It felt that it all went the wrong side of the post for them today. Sometimes you have days like that.

"But a positive side for Liverpool is they didn't do anything stupid at the back, they haven't kept many clean sheets this season and they will be pleased they managed to do that."

Carragher, though, did acknowledge the visitors will see it as two points dropped considering the chances they created.

"Looking at how dominant they were, they will be disappointed," he said. "Southampton is always a tough game, they got a beating against Chelsea last time out at home…but it's not an easy place to come to.

Jurgen Klopp gives his reaction to the draw

"But with the chances Liverpool had and the improved second-half performance, they will be disappointed."

That Southampton held out for a point owed much to centre-back duo Jose Fonte and Virgil Van Dijk, both of whom made brilliant last-ditch tackles to prevent goal-scoring chances.

And Carragher said: "You can see how Southampton were set up from the start of the game, it was pretty obvious the game was going to be about counter attacking for them and they believed in their defensive side, and why not, with two centre-backs like that and a midfield three in front of them.

"The two centre-backs can go up against anyone in the league. Fonte is a top level player and Van Dijk has impressed everyone since he came here even though there were some doubts coming from Celtic. He looks like he has everything."
