England booked their place in the World Cup quarter-finals after a clash with Colombia which saw several flashpoints.

Eric Dier was the penalty shootout hero after Jordan Pickford had kept out Carlos Bacca's spot-kick, and it was the final act of an energy-sapping contest at the Spartak Stadium in Moscow.

Harry Kane put England on course for victory after his 57th-minute penalty but Yerry Mina dramatically forced extra-time when he headed in from Juan Cuadrado's corner in the third minute of stoppage time.

But England prevailed and head to Samara to face Sweden on Saturday in confident mood after showing their mental strength in the face of their streetwise South American opponents.

American referee Mark Geiger had his hands full as we chart an eventful night in the Russian capital...

54: Penalty to England. Carlos Sanchez grabs hold of Kane inside the box after a corner from Kieran Trippier. Colombia are furious as Sanchez is booked with Kane doing well to draw the foul with his movement.

It takes over three minutes to take the penalty as Colombia complain - and several players scuff up the penalty spot with Radamel Falcao and Jefferson Lerma among them.
