Highlights of the EFL Cup 2nd round match between Norwich and Coventry

Norwich cruised into the EFL Cup third round with an emphatic 6-1 win over League One Coventry at Carrow Road.

Canaries boss Alex Neil made 11 changes from the side that drew 1-1 in the Championship at bitter rivals Ipswich on Sunday but the hosts still had far too much class for Tony Mowbray's side.

Kyle Lafferty scored his first Norwich goal since September 2015 in a rare start for the Northern Ireland international before Sergi Canos doubled the lead prior to the break.

Ruben Lameiras pulled back one for the Sky Blues from the penalty spot, when Harry Toffolo shoved Dion Kelly-Evans, but Russell Martin and Jacob Murphy put Norwich back in control before Canos and debutant Ben Godfrey completed the rout.

James Maddison spurned the first chance to punish former club Coventry with a 25-yard free-kick that flew into empty terraces in a sparsely-populated Carrow Road.

Reice Charles-Cook had to scramble across his line to tip over the unmarked Steven Whittaker's effort in the 17th minute with the Canaries predictably dictating possession against their lower-league opponents.

Sky Blues captain Sam Ricketts needed all his experience to thwart Canos when the former Liverpool starlet burst onto the influential Maddison's cushioned pass.

Norwich punished naivety at the back from Jordan Willis to open the scoring on 25 minutes, Canos racing away down the Canaries' left to pick out the unmarked Lafferty who coolly rifled past Charles-Cook from 16 yards.

Lewis Page tried to respond for Mowbray's men with a half-volley that drifted wide of Paul Jones' far post but Canos doubled the hosts' lead when he bent a low 20-yard finish beyond the sprawling Charles-Cook in the 36th minute.

The over-worked Coventry goalkeeper denied Murphy a third for the rampant hosts in the 42nd minute with a sharp stop with his feet to divert the ball behind at the expense of a corner.

Norwich were pegged back in the 56th minute when Toffolo was adjudged to have shoved Kelly-Evans and Lameiras rifled a low penalty beyond Jones.

Norwich, however, restored their two-goal advantage two minutes later with captain Martin guiding Murphy's corner past Charles-Cook from five yards before Murphy sealed the victory in the 63rd minute by guiding a right-footed shot around the Coventry keeper from the edge of the area.

Canos made it five in the 80th minute when he collected Josh Murphy's clever nutmeg to roll home and Godfrey marked his arrival with a thumping sixth four minutes from time.
