Diego Valeri scored both goals as the Portland Timbers beat the 10-man San Jose Earthquakes 2-0 in Major League Soccer's Western Conference.
The Timbers have fallen off the pace in recent weeks but Valeri made sure they got back on track on Friday night at Providence Park.
But San Jose Earthquakes were down to 10 men before the ball had ended up in the back of the net, with Darwin Ceren sent off in the 38th minute for two yellow cards in the space of a minute.
Valeri - the Timbers' leading scorer so far this season - opened the scoring in the 50th minute, with Zarek Valentin sending the Argentinian on the break, bursting into the box and hitting home to put the hosts ahead.
The playmaker ended any doubt about the outcome with a second goal in the fourth minute of second half injury time, hitting home after Fanendo Adi's effort had rebounded off the post.
Portland Timbers have now climbed two points above the San Jose Earthquakes into third in the Western Conference and to within two points of leaders the Houston Dynamo.
