Cristiano Ronaldo is set to equal Luis Figo's all-time appearance record for Portugal as they get their Euro 2016 campaign underway against Iceland in Saint-Etienne.

The star captain has 126 caps for his country with his expected inclusion in the starting XI meaning he will equal Figo's 127 and is likely to surpass the Portuguese legend during the tournament.

The Real Madrid man also scored twice in a 7-0 thrashing of Estonia in Portugal's final warm-up game, and scored the most goals for his country (5) as they qualified top of Group I.

With plenty of eye-catching talent in the ranks aside from Ronaldo, forward Eder says the team are confident of a long stay in France.

"We're working towards winning the tournament. We've got huge ambition and we want to get the right results," the Lille player told a press conference.

"The group has been working very well together, the players are playing very well. Right now, we have all it takes to do something amazing in this competition and that's exactly what we want to do."

It will certainly be a David versus Goliath contest as Iceland make their first ever appearance at a major tournament, but qualified in style as they finished second in their qualifying group behind the Czech Republic.

But despite being the smallest nation to have ever qualified for the European Championships, manager Lars Lagerback doesn't see defeat as the end of Iceland's bid to qualify for the knockout stages.

"If we are performing as we should do I think we have a really good chance to go on from the group stage," he said. "I think that is quite possible. I think we can handle a loss against them. Normally the first game is a lot of a key match, but I don't think this time.

Cristiano Ronaldo and Pepe could land roles in Hollywood, according to Iceland coach Lars Lagerback.

"But depending on the first result then we know how important it is coming to the second and the third. Everybody speaks about Hungary as a key game, but Hungary are not a bad team either. It is about taking points in all three matches I think."

Team news

Ricardo Quaresma is a doubt for Portugal after picking up a muscular injury, which will be a blow for manager Fernando Santos after the winger's fine performance against Estonia where he netted twice and assisted two more.

Aside from this, the remainder of the squad are available for selection, including exciting 18-year-old Renato Sanches and Southampton pair Jose Fonte and Cedric Soares.

Iceland will be captained by Cardiff City's Aron Gunnarsson, with Swansea midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson the star man for his country, scoring six times during qualifying.

Both players were carrying injuries heading into the competition alongside Kolbeinn Sigthorsson, but they are all now fit and available for selection.

Portugal have won their two previous games against Iceland by an aggregate score of 8-4. Both were in the Euro 2012 qualifiers.

This will be Portugal's seventh European Championship appearance. They have reached the semi-finals in four of their previous six.

Portugal have made it to the semi-finals of the European Championships the most times without ever lifting the trophy (4).

Iceland used only 20 players during their qualifying campaign, the lowest tally alongside Austria.

Iceland's average age in the qualifying campaign was 28 years and 8 months (as of the end of the qualifiers), the second oldest among the 24 teams that have made it to the finals after the Republic of Ireland.

Cristiano Ronaldo could become - along with Zlatan Ibrahimovic - the first player to score in four different editions of the European Championships (2 goals in 2004, 1 in 2008, 3 in 2012).

Fernando Santos is taking part in his third major tournament as manager, his first with Portugal. He led Greece to the quarter finals of Euro 2012 and to the last 16 at the World Cup in 2014.

This is Lars Lagerback's seventh major tournament as manager. He took charge of Sweden in tandem with Tommy Soderberg at Euro 2000, World Cup 2002 and Euro 2004. He was also in sole charge at World Cup 2006 and Euro 2008. His last major tournament was as Nigeria boss at World Cup 2010.

Cristiano Ronaldo is the X Factor in this game and the fact Eidur Gudjohnsen is still playing for Iceland tells you all you need to know. Portugal were very comfortable against England at Wembley and if Ronaldo had played in that game they would have won.
