Rangers v Kilmarnock preview: Pedro Caixinha set to name similar XI from cup exit

Pedro Caixinha is set to name a similar XI to the side that were beaten in the League Cup semi-final when Rangers host Kilmarnock in the Scottish Premiership on Wednesday night.

The Gers fell to a 2-0 defeat against Motherwell on Sunday, but will need to pick themselves back up for their home league tie as they look to keep pace with Aberdeen and Celtic at the top of the table - who also play each other on Wednesday.

Caixinha was scathing of his side after the cup exit, saying the players "embarrassed" the club, but said he would not be making wholesale changes.

Caixinha has told his Rangers players they are embarrassing themselves and the club with recent performances

"I've told the players, 'You are embarrassing me, you are embarrassing our club, you are embarrassing our fans'. Now it time for you to react and I'm glad we're playing on Wednesday," he told a pre-match press conference.

"If I could pick the same XI, if they were all available, those guys who didn't do the work who really needed to do it [on Sunday], those are the one who would start on Wednesday."

It's a different story for Kilmarnock - who sit just outside the relegation place on goal difference - and new manager Steve Clarke will take charge of his first game at Ibrox, but says the side will work slowly on making improvements.

"You can't come in and bombard them with too much information. That would just confuse them," he said.

"We have worked on one or two basic principles that should be good enough to help us go forward, and slowly over the course of the season, we will keep adding little principles, better principles, hopefully a better style of play and better play on the pitch and the results will improve.

"It's going to be slowly, slowly that things will start to change, but hopefully the Kilmarnock fans will see one or two changes in the coming matches."

Team news

Rangers will have to do without goalkeeper Jak Alnwick (arm) and defender Fabio Cardoso (broken nose) for the match.

Kenny Miller's future remains unclear after he was again overlooked at the weekend but Jordan Rossiter has stepped up his return from a knee injury. However, skipper Lee Wallace (groin) remains out.

The good news for Kilmarnock manager Clarke is that he has no new injury concerns ahead of the trip as he looks to choose his first XI.

Opta stats

Rangers have lost just two of their last 22 home meetings with Kilmarnock in the Scottish Premiership, winning the other 20; there hasn't been a draw between these two sides at this level at Ibrox since May 1999.

Kilmarnock have lost just once in their last five top-flight fixtures against the Gers (W2 D2), having lost 13 of the previous 14 prior to this run (D1).

Rangers have managed just one win in their five league games at Ibrox this season (L3 D1). This is the first time they are on such a run since the current format of the Scottish Premiership began in 1998-99.

Kilmarnock's 2-0 win at Partick Thistle last time out was their first victory in 11 Scottish Premiership matches (D3 L7), and earned them their first clean sheet in 13 games.

James Tavernier has more Scottish Premiership assists in 2017 than any other defender (7). Only Patrick Roberts has more assists to his name in this calendar year (9).
