West Brom v Burnley preview: Goalkeeper Tom Heaton closing in on return

Goalkeeper Tom Heaton is closing in on a return from injury, giving Sean Dyche a potential selection headache as Burnley travel to West Brom in the Premier League on Saturday.

Heaton has played four games behind closed doors as he builds up his fitness after suffering a dislocated shoulder in September, but his return is not guaranteed given Pope's form in his absence, which earned him an England call-up.

"Tom's really close to getting back to being involved. I spoke to him in the week about it and (it's about) being almost overly assured he's right," Dyche explained.

"He's going really well, he's feeling really good. They're the challenges you want as a manager. That's why you bring players to the club.

"You don't bring players in just for an easy ride. You want that competitive element. I certainly want to be put in a position where I have to choose and choose wisely because they're performing well."

West Brom are 10 points adrift of safety with only seven games remaining and when asked about the club's chances of avoiding the drop, manager Alan Pardew said: "Our results so far suggest it will be difficult, if not impossible. But it is one game at a time and that's as simplistic as I'm keeping it with the group.

"I've made it clear that I am fighting for this club because I believe it's a good club. I kind of feel I owe this football club.

"The results since I've been here should have been better and I'd like to come back next season with a squad that better reflects the way I play, with a bit more attacking prowess."

Team news

Despite his recent progress, Heaton may still be missing for Burnley this weekend.

Johann Berg Gudmundsson should be fine despite picking up a knock on international duty with Iceland but Scott Arfield (calf), Robbie Brady and Steven Defour (both knee) remain out.

West Brom will be without Sam Field, who will miss out after sustaining a calf injury while away with the England U21 squad and Gareth Barry is still having issues with a knee problem.

Barry could be back for the home game against Swansea but Nacer Chadli (thigh) and Daniel Sturridge (hamstring) will be a little longer.

Opta stats

West Brom have won nine of their last 10 home league matches against Burnley (D1), winning the last two each by a 4-0 scoreline.

The Clarets are winless in their last seven top-flight encounters with the Baggies (D3 L4), last winning against them in March 1970 under manager Jimmy Adamson.

West Ham 0-3 Burnley

West Brom haven't done the league double over Burnley since the 2001-02 campaign, when they finished second to Manchester City in the second tier to gain promotion to the Premier League for the first time.

Burnley have played three Premier League games against sides starting the day bottom of the table and are yet to win (P3 W0 D1 L2).

The Baggies have lost each of their last seven Premier League games - they last had a longer of run of defeats in the top flight between August and September 1985 (a run of nine).

Sean Dyche's side have won a league-high 48.8% of their Premier League points away from home this season (21/43).

Bournemouth 2-1 West Brom

Only Manchester City (10) have conceded fewer goals on the road in the Premier League this season than Burnley (14). Half of those 14 goals Burnley have conceded have come against either league leaders Man City (3), second placed Man Utd (2) or reigning champions Chelsea (2).

Alan Pardew has collected just 12 points from a possible 81 in his last 27 Premier League games as manager of both Crystal Palace and West Brom (W2 D6 L19).

Merson's prediction

West Brom are relegated really, there would have to be a major miracle now. They won their first two games of the season and have only won one since then so that's 28 games without a win and now you're asking them to win six of their last seven games maybe. There's no chance of that.
