Wigan fought back from two goals down to beat Gillingham 3-2 at the DW Stadium thanks to an injury-time winner from captain Craig Morgan.
Needing just a point to go above Burton at the top of the League One table on Thursday night, Gillingham made the perfect start through Dominic Samuel's 25th-minute strike and they doubled their advantage just after the break thanks to Rory Donnelly's close-range header.
However, Wigan roared back with three goals in the final 26 minutes, starting with Will Grigg smashing Michael Jacobs' knockdown past Stuart Nelson and into the back of the net.
Gary Caldwell's side were level just three minutes later with a moment Nelson will want to forget as he spilled Max Power's long-range effort into the goal.
With just over 20 minutes to complete the comeback, Wigan came on strong in search of all three points but it took until the sixth minute of injury time for them to make the breakthrough.
Morgan rose highest to head home the corner to complete the turnaround and hand Wigan all three points.
Despite the defeat, Gillingham stay second just one point behind Burton, while Wigan stay fifth but move seven points clear of Southend in seventh to consolidate their position in the play-offs.
