Pressure on Pac-Man

A Cotto win would not really be an upset, says Jim

Jim Watt Posted 12th November 2009 view comments

Don't think for a minute that this will be another straightforward move-up win for Manny Pacquiao.

I have always been a fan of Miguel Cotto ever since he turned pro; right from the off he had the air of a complete fighter.

Granted, he is a little bit mechanical and there are times when he could stop the other guy a lot quicker, but he is happy drilling away, just getting the job done. He is one helluva fighter, make no mistake about that.

Pacquiao and Cotto: problems in store for Pac-Man?

Pacquiao and Cotto: problems in store for Pac-Man?

But you have to talk about stages of a career in boxing. Yes, Cotto is 29 and younger than Pacquiao but I do wonder if he is happy with what he's achieved, whether he has lost that extra edge.

Pacquiao is on the crest of a wave, loving every minute of it and bursting at the seams. I just wonder whether that little something extra you need to be a really, really top fighter is missing from Cotto.

Right now Bob Arum has two superstar fighters; come Sunday morning he will only have one. Now which of Pacquiao and Cotto do you think he is willing to sacrifice?

Miguel Cotto v Manny Pacquiao

He has always been well-schooled and fights the way you would want to teach someone to fight, but that little injection of drama just isn't there.

I just don't think he's been the same since the loss to Antonio Margarito. Ok, there is a chance that Margarito was cheating and padding his hands and you can't blame him for not taking those punches, but the fact is he quit.

Cotto might well have won the fight had it been fair and square but he had to take that beating and the fact that he went down on one knee, worries me. It sounds harsh to say but had he been knocked out, I wouldn't be so concerned.

Confidence

Since then, he did what he had to do against Michael Jennings but really struggled against Joshua Clottey.

You have to give him tremendous credit for taking that fight because the Pacquiao deal was already signed and sealed and plenty of people would've opted for a lazy tune-up, but I do think the pre-Margarito Cotto would have dealt with Clottey far, far better.

He was cut early and had to deal with that, but I do think that little something might have gone from his game and this is a fight he will have wanted to go into with his confidence sky-high.

Pacquiao on the other hand, is on the crest of a wave. But you could argue his last two performances have flattered him because Oscar de la Hoya just messed up awfully with the weight and was a shell of a man and well, Ricky was just Ricky and came tearing out and really brought about his own demise.

The Filipino deserves to be the favourite here on form alone. I wouldn't put my house on it, but I am definitely leaning towards Pacquiao. Cotto will be bigger and stronger than either de la Hoya or Hatton, but the fact there is a 10st 5lbs agreement in place suits Pacquiao already.

Just dragging that extra couple of pounds off will inconvenience Cotto - and I saw him look half-dead at the weigh-in before his fight with Paulie Malignaggi not so long ago.

Superstar

Also, it is important to remember that both of these guys are promoted by Bob Arum. Right now Bob has two superstar fighters; come Sunday morning he will only have one. Now which of Pacquiao and Cotto do you think he is willing to sacrifice?

Maybe the dice are already loaded in Manny's favour, I don't know. I do know though this is one helluva match-up, a real trade fight and even if the odds are against him, one Cotto can easily win. I don't think you could even call it an upset if he did pull this off.

It has not got the same media attention as Pacquiao's fight with de la Hoya fight and for us over here, the Hatton fight. That is why haven't heard Freddie Roach telling us what to expect.

Normally Freddie predicts these huge fights so well, but maybe this time the spotlight hasn't been so sharp. If Freddie was ducking and diving in the press, making excuses, then I might worry they don't fancy this.

You know though, that he will have his man properly prepared. I know they have got Jose Luis Castillo in for sparring and although he is obviously not identical to Cotto, he does come forward and he does like to place his shots precisely, much like the Puerto Rican.

Invincible

Pacquiao will have to perform here too. Neither Hatton or de la Hoya came close to hitting him, but you have to say Cotto will land. People forget he is a left-hand orthodox fighter which means he jabs with his strongest hand, does 80 per cent of his work with that, and he also has a tremendous left hook to back it up.

If Cotto tags him, what will it do? We know Pacquiao has been hurt and decked - and beaten - before. He might be the man in form but he is by no means invincible.

He gets by on his speed, but if Cotto can get himself set and get those precise punches where he wants them, he can ask some serious questions.

He might though, be a little one-paced to pull this off. There is no shortage of imagination in the way he puts his punches together, but he did struggle with a quick fighter like Malignaggi - and we all know speed is what Pacquiao and Roach will be building their gameplan around.

I would expect the same formula we've seen from them of late, in out quickly, setting a fast pace, if only because it ain't broke so it don't need fixing. But, Cotto is not chinny, he can take a shot and although I have my doubts after the Margarito fight, I can't see Manny finishing this early.

I would lean towards a points win simply because he is at the very peak of his powers, the place in his career where every fighter wants to be. Cotto, as good as he is, might just lack that little extra you need to fire on all cylinders and be the very best in the business.

I hope and feel this fight is gonna be alot closer than many people here are expecting. Alot of people are backing Pacquiao simply on his last couple of performances which granted were pretty awesome efforts. Cotto is a quality boxer and he's gonna be sharper than Hatton and De la Hoya. I certainly dont think he'll be dropped early and if he gets in this fight he can beat Pacquiao late. Alot of the comments here about Margarito beating Cotto have been talking about him being quick and out boxing Cotto, but Cotto was comfortably winning that fight for most of it, it was Magarito that was to slow and Cotto that had the speed, hitting him at will for the early rounds. It was mainly down to the fact the Margarito is made of granite! that he was able to walk through the shots and i feel that how the fight turned is questionable due to his illegal wraps. Cotto is no push over and if the body shots land and the fight moves through the rounds Pacquiao's speed is gonna be sucked out of him and he may end up standing toe to toe with a tough guy that can throw big hurtful punches. Should be exciting.

Yes, alot of people think that Manny will win and who wouldn't right? Manny has the speed that most of the boxer out there just dreamed off, not only that we forget he is too a left hander but we seamingly forget that over the years both of his hands are massively equals on strenght that it can both deliver a K.O. power. So what will you get from a full throtle hand and foot speed with a matching fire power? A K.O. with authority. Don't get me wrong Cotto is also strong but if were talking about a better fighter in this fight you even the odds. As we all know Manny is Money hahaha. I really want to see a Pacquiao vs Mayweigther fight. Now thats a seamingly even figth and much more exciting

tired of people like you saying oscar was shot when he fought manny, ricky was not good enough....why can't you accept that manny won because he was the better fighter? to prove your point that manny fought spoiled merchandise, why dont you go 12 rounds with oscar or ricky and see if your point holds water...you just cant handle the truth, maybe you never fought a 12 rounder before..

This promises to be a good fight, I have respect for Manny as he doesnt duck the best fighters and you just wonder how long and how far can he go? One thing for sure he looks better and stronger in every fight. I dont think we can compare him to the manny paqo that fought marquez....In the whole some great line ups in the boxing world! We have Haye as a champion in the heavy weight division Chad Dawson may follow? unless he decides to fight Bernard Hopkins or Pascal? which would be good fights, although Hopkins seems to be relaxing abit after defeated Pavlik so well, and age is not on Hopkins side. Will Pavlik return as Champion? it would have been great to see Pavlik part of the Super Six competition that involves Kessler, Froch, Abraham etc... With the return of Mayweather, and possble line ip with manny paqo can it get any better? Then we have Khan vs Salita, Mitchell vs Prescott , i'd like to see John Murray fight somelike Katsidis. Alot going on and alot to look forward too!

Michael Tibo says...

De lahoya is better boxer than Cotto he hits hard than Cotto but the problem was did he land that left hook (like cotto's hook) on Paquiao if Dela Hoya fight Cotto Dela hoya will win. When Paquiao knocked out Hatton in 2nd round and Cotto enters the ring he will sleep too. Hatton is stronger than cotto (they should fight each other after paquiao beat cotto) I believe that hatton still have chance to regain himself but he must learn his lesson never under estimate a smaller opponent boxing is not meant only for bigger and stroger people and most of all boxing needs dicipline in and out the ring be in good shape always

David Owen says...

I disagree with the other poster, Margarito had success because he started stepping across to Cotto's left hand side and started cranking up the right hands. Cotto fights with his left hand high and when he fought Margarito and he was being backed up, his left would obscure his vision when moving to his right, so when Margarito started throwing the right hand Cotto found it difficult to see it coming to avoid it, watch the fight from round 5/6 i think it was and that is what is happening, mark my words. Cotto also fights square on, Margarito took advantage of this to, because Cotto is so square he gives you the uppercut straight up the middle, if you watch Margarito he was throwing a double left uppercut to nudge Cotto's head up out of his gloves then throwing booming right hands over the top to finish up the combo.

Posted 15:21 13th November 2009

David Owen says...

Manny's straight left hand is going to hit Cotto often and hard because of Cotto's stance. Cotto keeps it in the centre Manny will peck away at him from long range and win because he has superior footspeed and handspeed, Cotto pressures him he could wear Manny down and KO him, but that is extremely dangerous thing to do with a sharp shooter like Pacquiao who does have fast hands and power as Hatton found out. Its okay chasing Pacquiao but Morales ended up on the canvas chasing him, so did Hatton.

i'll tell you frankly.Cotto he will dance lke chicken during 1,2,3, rounds by next round he'll some couples of combos.later on pacquiao declare as a new champ.

I agree with Jim in respect that Cotto will provide a sterner test to Pacquiao than his last two bouts and like Jim I can't see past Pacquiao taking the victory with a late stoppage or points win.

Mark Wood says...

Roach has predicted an early, possibly first round, knockout. This is on the grounds that Pacman starts quickly and Cotto slowly and that Manny will be able to tag Cotto pretty easily. People he hits get knocked out. I don't agree with Freddie but I think that Cotto will be stopped - speed kills, not power. As Haye proved, you can't hurt what you can't catch. I've heard the weight thing so many times before; before each of the Hatton and Oscar fights Pacquiao was going to be out-muscled and we saw what happened. After this fight, the excuse will be that Margarito took the life out of Cotto, mark my words. Still, very exited about this one and while I predict a Pacquiao win, I think it can go either way. Good on Sky Sports for putting the fight on - life is becoming alot easier as a boxing fan in the UK these days (barring the late starts!!)

Posted 11:22 13th November 2009

Matt Langford says...

This fight hinges on whether Pacquiao can avoid Cotto's left hook. If he can stay away from those big heavy punches then I see him winning this fight comfortably. Remember when Cotto fought Margarito? The Mexican couldn't miss and that was down to his speed (regardless of whether his gloves were loaded). Pacquiao is a lot faster than Margarito so I see this fight going to the Phillipino but like I said, only if he can avoid that big left of Cotto's. On the other hand, if Cotto can land it will make it a very exciting fight.

Posted 10:35 13th November 2009

Rob C says...

really good article arguements for both camps. i Dont think i will be a ko, maybe if Manny gets in close, and starts throwing punches in bunches, then maybe the ref would be inclined to step in, if Cotoor lands those left hooks to the body (where Manny has been hurt and down before) then it could go his way. Either Cotto ko, or Manny points win, great fight non-the less
