Giggs masterclass

Richard Bailey highlights Giggs' match winning display amongst a galaxy of multi-million pound stars

The Insider - Richard Bailey Posted 21st September 2009 view comments

With well over £200million worth of talent of show in the epic Manchester derby at Old Trafford on Sunday it was perhaps surprising that a player who cost his club nothing should steal the show.

However when you consider that player to be Ryan Giggs the element of surprise is immediately lost.

The 35-year-old has been wowing crowds up and down the land since the Premier League began but even by his skyscraper-like standards his performance against 'noisy neighbours' - as his manager Sir Alex Ferguson so accurately refers to them - Manchester City had you at times opened mouthed.

Giggs: Rolling back the years

Giggs: Rolling back the years

Normally players in their mid-30s are winding down their careers in the lower leagues or cleaning off their golf clubs as they ready themselves for retirement. Players lose the pace, guile and agility that made them famous, while their bodies hint that it may be time to call it a day when they are still feeling the effects of Saturday's game on Wednesday. Not Giggs.

The Welshman seems to grow better with age. The winger showed all of the above attributes in abundance as he ran poor Micah Richards, some 14 years his junior, a merry dance on the left flank as he appeared to roll back the years. Ultimately the most astonishing bit of all was that he didn't cost Manchester United a penny.

Much has been made of the fortunes spent by City over the past year as they look to break up the monopoly of the 'big four'.

Even without the £25million rated Emmanuel Adebayor and the record £32million purchase of Robinho their starting line-up for the derby still came to a staggering £133million. You'd think that for a combined total of £38million manager Mark Hughes would have bought two centre-backs (Joleon Lescott and Kolo Toure) who could actually head the ball away from set pieces, but that is straying away from the point.

Before I am accused of jumping on the anti-City bandwagon let me point out that United are far from innocent when it comes to flaunting their financial muscle to bully opponents in the transfer market.

Refreshing

With the likes of Rio Ferdinand, Dimitar Berbatov and Wayne Rooney, all of whom cost around the £30million mark, United's first XI for the clash amounted to a cool £118.5million - which makes it even more refreshing that a boy from Cardiff who came through the youth set-up at Old Trafford should be the real hero of the piece.

Giggs was alive from the first moments when he caught Shaun Wright-Phillips napping by the corner flag, allowing a quick throw-in to find Patrice Evra who crossed for Rooney for the opener.

City came storming back as Gareth Barry made Ben Foster pay for a careless error as the sides went into the break on level terms. However it was in the second-half that Giggs and United began to turn the screw.

A looping cross from Giggs set-up Darren Fletcher to head United 2-1 up before Craig Bellamy thundered City back on level terms once more. Giggs was not to be deterred and created two chances for Dimitar Berbatov to put the game beyond City but for some great saves from Shay Given.

Giggs finally crafted United's third when his superbly flighted free-kick from the left was met once more by Fletcher. But back came City with Bellamy equalising for the third time on 90 minutes. That was just the mere sub-plot to what was to be the ultimate box-office ending.

With cries for the final whistle ringing around Old Trafford Giggs plucked the ball from the sky in the 96th minute - when only four were initially signalled - and assessed his options for a split second. I'm guessing that under the circumstances, with every second vital, even some of the top players in the Premier League would have swung a boot and lumped the ball aimlessly back into the box. Not Giggs.

The winger picked his pass and caught Wright-Phillips, not for the first time, unaware with the City man seemingly rejecting his defensive responsibilities to allow Michael Owen to steal in and slot past Given for a late, late winner.

Unthinkable

Giggs is producing the kind of form that has seen even his detractors, the veteran was unbelievably and inexplicably booed off by some sections of the Old Trafford crowd when substituted in a 2003 League Cup semi-final second-leg clash with Blackburn, put thoughts of what United will do when the time eventually comes to replace the wing wizard to the back of their minds.

It was also fitting that Fletcher, another United youth team product who has also been no stranger to cat calls from the terraces from Red Devils fans in the past, should also stand out among a galaxy of multi-million pound superstars at the same time.

However there was something poignant about the fact that the most decorated player in the English game should still look to be the most driven and determined out on the pitch as he refused to give in to City's stubborn yet admirable retort.

Perhaps the biggest testimony to Giggs is that while United players such as Rooney and Gary Neville receive the full vitriol of abuse from City fans, and who can really blame them after Neville's mindless celebration in front of the visiting section after Owen had slotted home, Giggs has remained somewhat untouched. Even the most die-hard of Blues fans are hard pushed to deny they don't begrudgingly respect the wing wizard. And that's the greatest of accolades.

what an article, i am in tears! I have a Giggs jersey that i bought out of a bag of aid that was meant for flood victims in 2000 in mozambique. yes its true these things get sold here! the shirt was quite dirty. so i washed the stains off, i perfumed it, and then wore it to a local bar to watch united play. my favorite team then was Benfica, and i didnt know much about united. but when i saw united play that and this man i had his name on my jersey dance on the wings, plus the passion with which this team in red played i no longer looked back. i became a hardline supporter of Giggs and United, and have been emulating him on and off the pitch. the housekeefer gave the jersey a hot iron, it now has several holes in it. still that has not stopped me from wearing during game day, and i dont mind to loughed at, because it represents what Giggs has stood for all these years. i will wear it to the last grain of cotton on it!!! viva Giggs!!

One of the best articles that skysports has had in a long time. Giggs is one of those players that will go down in United history alongside the greats. The derby showcase just proved that not only is he one of uniteds greatest assets but that fears of him having lost his touch are unforunded. Just look at the level of players that he has played with over the years (cantona, Beckham at his best, Roy Keane and many others) and how not one of them has a bad thing to say about him. He is a credit to the club and to the sport and he has a special place in every united fans heart.

Ryan Giggs is the best overall player that I have ever seen. His dedication, play and professionalism should be an example for anyone involved in sports. The professionals here in the U.S. should learn from him. More of the above and less of "whats in it for me. "

As a Liverpool fan but also a Welshman I have to say Giggs was fantastic on Sunday. He was the clear man of the match, and it was actually embarassing that Fletcher was given the award on Sky instead. Fletcher scored two headers, one which was deflected in as it was going wide and then did his usual thing of passing sideways and kicking or tripping anyone who went past him. If you are going to give MOM to goalscorers give it to Bellamy who scored a candidate for Goal of the Month. But going back to Giggs, he is a credit to the Game, United and Wales and is undoubtedly one of the greatest players from these shores.

Giggs wing play was brilliant to watch. Seing him hitting the bye line was awesome. Giggs and Evra turning Richards & co inside out. Vintage stuff. Man City's defence were a shambles. Form is fickle class is permenant....Come on Utd.

I think the best compliment I can give Giggs is that he is what George Best could have been if Besty had fully taken advantage of his undoubted ability. England would be have been a good stage for his talents (the what if Giggs were English argument has been raging for 20 years) but Giggsy could walk into any team in the world... even at this stage of his career. Even with all his achievements in the past 20 years, I cant help but wonder how much he and Man U would have achieved if he did not have his hamstring problems during the 1990's. I think we are now seeing what could have been. Its almost scary.

Ryan Giggs = loyalty. And how he has been rewarded for it with medals galore. I'm a die hard Gooner who still has nightmares about his FA Cup wonder goal against us 10 years ago and he is still going, albeit with his football brain making up for the pace of old. In a money driven sport, Giggs could be the last to represent one club, he is proof that if you work hard, have talent and play for a truly big club success comes your way on and off the field. Just one thought, what price in todays market would he fetch if he was 26-27? Giggsy I salute you, for your loyalty and a remarkable career, if only a few more in the game today were like you!

Great article. As a Liverpool fan, I obviously have nothing but contempt for Manchester United, but I have the greatest respect for Ryan Giggs. A fantastic player, a fantastic servant and a fantastic role model. It is unbelievable to think that this is a player who is still playing at the very highest level - it's over 10 years since THAT goal against Arsenal and yet he is still tormenting Premiership defenders with the same wizardry and professionalism. He is part of a dying breed of footballer, I only hope that Stevie G can continue on until a similar age.

I am jealous of all the people in england who see Sir Ryan in front of them every week at OT and other stadiums. Unfortunately i don't have the means to come to england, but thank god there is live broadcoasting of english football here in Mauritius. I never miss a utd match on tv here in Mauritius. I hope one day Sir Ryan comes to our paradise island to meet his thousands of Mauritian fans. The number 11 should be removed after the welsh wizard hangs up his boots (i hope that never hapen). He deserves all the respect. The next utd coach after SAF. Also as an engand fan, i regret we do not have ryan giggs. Viva Giggsy

Ben Goldrick says...

Ryan Giggs has been there and done it, but still at the age of 35 and going on 36 in November he still has the hunger and desire to succeed that matches current super stars Messi, Ronaldo, Kaka etc. We saw just why Giggs is a legend yesterday, his patience and vision helped provide Owen with the winning goal, through the years, we have seen him score the greatest FA cup goal of all time, and been a hero so many times for Man Utd, and the performance yesterday shown just why we all love him. Current Vice captain of man utd and maybe one day the manager he reminds me of fergie the way he has the desire to win more and more trophies every year and carry on going. If a top european side said to me now can we have a swap Messi for Giggs, Ronaldo for Giggs, Torres for Giggs the answer would be no simple as, he is class, hes a modern professional, the last of his era and still a Wing Wizard, man utd without Ryan Giggs is hard to imagine and may him carry on his magic for years to come. World Player of the year in December i doubt it but i wouldn't argue if it was handed to him

This is probably one of the best articles Iv ever read in sport. Kudos! This coming from a united fan whos been following the club for a mere 10 years and yet, has seen enough to believe that Ryan Giggs is one of the club's greatest ambassadors, if not the game of football. As for Gary Neville's celebration, it was pretty shameful (again, this coming from a die-hard united fan !), and hes really better off either hanging his boots or looking to push john o'shea for the rightback spot, and subsequently doing his talking on the pitch...

Ryan James (liverpool fan) says...

Giggs was superb against city, and he has been excellent so far this season, aside from his through ball for the winning goal, he terrorised Richards and put in some great crosses in, this on the back of a great free-kick and performance at Spurs. I thought the Player of the year award was generous last year, Giggs deserves something, but I don't believe he was the stand out player last season, however he is once again proving that age is no barrier if you take care of yourself and get lucky with major injuries. He might have lost that blistering pace but he still has amazimg ability and his football brain makes up for that loss of pace.
