On a day when Paul Scholes 'passed Manchester City to death' Gary Neville was on hand to give his team-mate the kiss of life as United's title tilt was resurrected at Eastlands.
A week in which the Salford-born schemer agreed to prolong the most illustrious of careers for another season at least was concluded by the most majestic of headed winners that rolled back the years and had United supporters celebrating like it's 1994.
Plenty to ponder for Capello
When Scholes first pulled on a United shirt, on September 21 against Port Vale in a League Cup tie (he scored twice in a 2-1 win), Alan Partridge could have been the the man with the microphone at Vale Park as it was in 1994 that Steve Coogan's most loved comedy creation, then a sports reporter, made a debut of his own on The Day Today.
The year's big movie was Forest Gump, while in the charts it was Oasis versus Blur as Britpop's defining albums Definitely Maybe and Parklife were released as soundtracks to a changing Britain that was ready to embrace New Labour down the tracks.
Whether employing back or top spin, raking a fifty yard pass from left to right or simply ticking things over intelligently, Scholes reminded everyone, amid the persistent profligacy, that possession is nine tenths of the law.
Oasis and Blur have come and gone (and come back again in the case of the latter), Coogan is still greeted in the street with 'Ah-ha!' by complete strangers and New Labour - well we all know what happened to them.
Scholes, though, remains the real deal. Bands, comedians and politicians are all subject to the fads of fashion but for footballers it is normally dodgy knees or ankles that determine shelf life. Not so for Scholes.
Ah-ha!
In an era where most footballers look as though they probably employ a bronzer when they take off their shirts to reveal physiques that have Arnold Schwarzenegger saying 'that's a bit much', wasn't it gloriously refreshing to see a short 35-year-old asthmatic score a 92nd minute winner? There's hope for us all yet.
Sir Alex Ferguson has long since accepted Scholes is no longer the box-to-box midfielder of yesteryear, save for the weekend, and if he ever shouted 'run, Scholes!, run!' he'd probably get the same single digit gesture his playmaker usually reserves for Father Time. But unlike a box of chocolates, you always know what you're going to get from Scholes: quality.
Sitting in front of United's back four on Saturday, Scholes was happy to allow Darron Gibson and Darren Fletcher to bomb past him in support of Wayne Rooney. Ferguson's decision to employ Rooney as a lone striker for much of the campaign has rejuvenated Scholes' career to the extent that Fabio Capello, in the stands at Eastlands, may just be ruing his premature decision to call time on his international career back in August 2004.
A five-man midfield complements Scholes' adapted game to a tee, providing him with the type of protection, and time, to use the ball as he does so exquisitely. Had United matched City's 4-4-2 he would persistently have been harangued in receiving the ball further up the pitch in a congested central third. Nigel De Jong was excellent as a destructive influence for City but the Dutchman knew he couldn't press Scholes further up the field as it would have left City's remaining middle three, which consisted of two out-and-out attacking wingers and Gareth Barry, overrun by United's midfield.
In that sense City's ambition was also their undoing. The limitations of their noble but foolhardy attacking approach allowed Scholes to give a master class in the art of passing. In the first half in particular he was on a different plane to the other 21 players on the pitch.
England calling
Like an NFL quarterback he set up every United play and while his wide receivers Ryan Giggs and Antonio Valencia were not always at their cutting best, there was much to admire in the approach play. Whether going short or long Scholes treated the ball like an old friend, to be respected not rushed. In total he made 52 passes, of which 48 were successful.
Where much of what enveloped him was frenetic and characterised by loose passing, Scholes was impervious to the occasion as like a puppet on a string he had the ball play to his every whim. Whether employing back or top spin, raking a fifty yard pass from left to right or simply ticking things over intelligently, Scholes reminded everyone, amid the persistent profligacy, that possession is nine tenths of the law.
Lee Westwood was in attendance and the US Masters runner-up can't help but have admired Scholes' manipulation of the ball. The United man always hit the fairway as he conducted proceedings in that unassuming but steely way of his; the iron fist in a velvet glove indeed.
Even his infamous tackling hit the mark on Saturday; his thunderous challenges which usually conclude with a yellow card rather than the ball were conspicuous only by their absence.
Given he'd rather take another smacker on the kisser from Gary Neville than be subjected to the media's glare it seems unlikely Capello would be able to convince Scholes to do a U-turn on his decision to hang up his international boots on 66 caps.
But what if, after a season in which he has patrolled Champions League games with similar relish, a final swansong on the world stage appealed. There is no player with a lesser ego but to be wooed by a nation may just hold some sway for the Ginger Prince.
The Italian tactician made it his principle aim upon taking the England reins to gets his charges playing in a patient style that is more in keeping with international football; an entirely different species to that of the Premier League. Who better than Scholes than to occupy the Xavi role?
Who would be better suited to the slower, refined perimeters of international football - where to give the ball away cheaply has been England's Achilles heel since the dawn of time - than Scholes?
What if...
Given Capello looked set to include David Beckham in his squad prior to his injury it's hardly unfathomable to imagine he's pondered the idea of an international recall for Scholes, while Gary Neville's form over the past few months will also have given him food for thought. Although I'm not sure they'd be allowed to room together.
In some of the eulogies waxing lyrical over the weekend he's been tagged the ultimate footballers' footballer but perhaps such a moniker does him ill-justice. In many senses Scholes is the antithesis to the modern day footballer.
In eschewing the ostentatious pursuits of the Bentley Boys, in resisting the lure of nightclubs and WAGS and dedicating his life to his craft, his art, Scholes is a class apart.
"My toughest opponent? Scholes of Manchester. He is the complete midfielder. Scholes is undoubtedly the greatest midfielder of his generation." Zinedine Zidane.

Im not gone tell you if Scholes is best player or whether he is in top 10 of all time. To decided i would to know alot of facts and details. As a football fan even though Scholes plays for UTD and i support chelsea i will hand it to him one of the best ever midfielders out there since ive been watching the game thats 14 years now. Someone who knows football knows Scholes is one of those players who deserves respect. Fair enough if he has a bad game once in a while doesnt mean he isnt one of the best. I have seen players shine for few years and then drop. Scholes on the other hand has been consistent and that has saved Man utd so much money over the years because you need a midfielder of great talent for a great team and Utd have had that for over 10 years...which in my opinion or anyone who knows football would say is on top top masterclass. If you ask me if he is underrated...yes by those who dont know football and the beautiful game. For me no i know Scholes is great because he has played a central role for Alex Ferguson and example set to many players yet to come. He has won alot and if England manager wants experience and quality he doesnt have to look to far to spot a true masterclass of the ball. Beckham is great but if they asked me to which player you would want to take the world cup i would choose Scholes anyday. I know Fabio would like to take him to the world cup but i think Scholes feels it will be too much on him at his age which is fair enough but if he wants to then i would definately include him in the squad. He is the Zidane of England just doesnt have the name. Scholes all in all is up there with all time best midfielders of all time.

Not a United fan, but a Scholesy fan. For a period of ten years he was best attacking midfielder in the world apart from zizou. Lampard and Gerard, can't dictate a game like Scholes. They do spectacular things in a game but can't control a game like Scholes or Xavi. When England have played against Spain, Gerard and Lampard looked lost against Xavi and Iniesta. Scholes a great passer, goalscorer and that great balance to just pirouette away from a player and give himself space like Xavi. A young Scholes the player England lack. The media may not give him the headlines he deserves but players do not underestimate his value, e.g. Maradona,Zidane.

Scholes has rejuvenated his youthful football abilities and with a greater master-mind game plan. Capello must re-call scholes to the national soccer team, and let him be placed in his original spot in the game, I swear that Englang will make it to the Fifa world cup final in Soccer City, Johannesburg. There shall be no call up favours but the selection must be based on reality and football facts experienced by everyone when Scholes touches the ball.

Why are you all responding to Diggy, he's obviously winding you all up, he can't even give his name out!!! Scholes is a legend, England have still not covered the role he played so well even with Lamps and Gerrard. As for comments about medals won by Neville, Brown, Scholesy and having 2 great players every year i think someone needs to remember that famous comment "you will never win anything with kids" OOPS Some medal haul for lucky players! Probably a Villa fan.

I think Scholes is a complete midfielder, he may be small and tiny but when he steps on the field he is the most tallest person there, excellent player with awesome passing ability along with holding the entire midfield and making the game for his team mates. If Scholes anounce tomorow that he is out of retirement then capello with certainly play him in England first 11 and guess what players like Gerrard, Lampard or other will have to take sideline because he is the true master. if palyers liek Zidane and Maradona says he is true player you can't argue. Scholes forever! An amazing footballer!

So is someone from the media going to ask him the question then? Paul, should Fabio invite you to the World Cup as part of the England squad would you accept? Wayne Rooney is the main man in the England team. We also need the players capable of making him tick to play along side him: Ferdinand, Neville, and Scholes. England need to adapt a 4-3-3 system with Rooney the main striker - let's play to our strengths and win something for once!

Diggy Soilder...do you understand football? You seem to be over awed by players who score or have the fancy tricks ect you need to consider the fact there are 10 other players on the pitch and its the ones who go about their business quietly and efficently, like Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs, Xavi and Ineista that are the true great players of our time

Diggy Soldier......not a clue! Your opinions are so ridiculous it pains me to read them! I challenge you to watch Scholes and tell me that his vision, touch and passing range is not among the best to ever play the beautiful game! The day Scholes hangs is boots up will be a sad day for football!

Diggy Soldier You sound like a little boy!! Quote " has had at least 2 star players every year for the last how many years - scholes is carried!!! Really this it not a computer game. Scholes has been apart of the mass of success utd have had over the past 12 years, yes he's not done it all on his own but i sure you can agree every team has a back bone and scholes has been consistently there for us. Can you think of a better passer in the english game over the past 5 years?? You talk about Rooney Ronaldo And Cantona all great players but they needed service too where did that come from?? Your only as good as the team around you, and as you say neville and bown and the rest of the "two stars" don't cut it... try checking you computer games and see who has been "Rated" one of the best midfielder's over the past decade!!! Scholes is technically flawless and the tacking issue you have, yeah Rooney, Ronaldo and Cantona were or are great at that...No they're not in the team for that reason and neither is he. He started as a second striker at utd and fell deeper cause of his passing ability.

last season when maradona visited tevez at carrington (united traning ground) he was aked what he enjoyed watching when the team trained answer "paul scholes". as a worker and fan of manchester united everyone in the club knows that guy is yhe most underated player in english football. you only need to watch him n training. over the years when the boss sets target practice in training he used to line up the players and ask scholes to aim for their backs and believe me ive worked here for five years he has never missed. that may not sound irrelavant but if you ask the villa fans about the paul scholes volley goal of the season a few years back they will tell you target practice heps. yes he is no longer a box to box plyer but this season alone he has gifted us 9 points when no one could not find the net. 6 in the prem i.e wolves and city. 3 in europe cska. the funny thing is scholesy does not even bother himself with what the media say all i can say i will shed a tear when he finally calls it time

I agree that Scholes should be able to play for another 2-3 years if Sir Ferguson rotates him the way he is doing presently. I for one , will definitely shed a tear when he finally hangs up his boots. What a legend , long may he grace the colours of Man United!!

Diggy Solider....I haven't herd someone be so blinded by stupidity in my life...There was so much wrong with what you said.....Lets talk about Scholes being "carried" first.....really!?!? Champions League two seasons ago when we beat Barca in the semi-finals....scholes rocket which sent united to the final.....he was in a different class then, as he was on Saturday....How has he been a united player if he is so replaceable!?!? Maybe not personal, but no one player could ever win the amount of trophies as he has by themselves...yes some may make more of a contribution, but not entirely by themselves...and as for the Ryan Giggs comment, well when you score a goal in every league season, be as consistent, albeit reserved role in the first team, as he has done and contribute at the crucial moment so a season.....no wonder why every England manager has been asked to comment on the brilliance of Ryan Giggs and their wish for him to play for England....either stop making up rubbish to write, or actually start "watching" football.....You can only appreciate the beautiful game if you actually watch it!!!

Mr Diggy Soldier....you clearly dont know anything! next you'll be saying zidane does not know what he's talking about? no one can denie lamps an gerrard are quality players but what have they won in comparison to scholes? just because scholes is a humble guy an rather spend his time with his family than the back pages of the sun he clearly isnt good enough?....just an idiot...

Firstly, I can't beleive how many people are letting the troll on here wind you up! Let him make his comments and don't reply, he'll soon get bored and disappear. As an unbiased (Newcastle) supporter, I think Scholes has been a great player, but to say he's better than Gerrard, Lampard etc is unfair on all parties concerned. They are all three different types of player. Scholes will sit and pick passes out these days, Lamps bombs forward to arrive in the box late (how Scholes USED to before age changed his game) and Gerrard is the versatile grab-the-game-by-the-scruff type player who's equally comfortable playing off the front man. Consider all three in this respect. Would Lampard get into the Man Utd or Liverpool team week-in week-out? I think so. Would Gerrard get into the Man Utd or Chelsea team week-in week-out? Again, I think so. Would Scholes get into the Liverpool or Chelsea teams week-in week-out..? Hmm... Liverpool quite possibly, alongside Mascherano and ahead of Lucas... but Chelsea? Who exactly would be displaced? certainly not Essien, Lampard, Malouda, Cole... the list goes on...
