Huddersfield v Aston Villa preview: Duo doubtful for Terriers
Tuesday 7 March 2017 13:39, UK
Huddersfield pair Danny Ward and Philip Billing are both injury doubts for the home game against Aston Villa.
Goalkeeper Ward was forced out of Saturday's home defeat to Newcastle after taking a knock to his leg and midfielder Billing was withdrawn due to a calf injury. Joel Coleman is on stand-by to replace Ward, while Jonathan Hogg could return to the starting line-up if Billing is ruled out.
Winger Sean Scannell is back in contention following a long-term ankle injury, but on-loan Chelsea midfielder Kasey Palmer (hamstring) will be sidelined until April.
Villa were left counting the cost of their weekend win at Rotherham as both Birkir Bjarnason and Jack Grealish were forced off through injury. Bjarnason is waiting to learn the full extent of his knee ligament injury, while fellow midfielder Grealish sustained a nasty cut on a knee.
Teenage winger Andre Green (hamstring) and Gary Gardner (ankle) both missed out at Rotherham after picking up injuries in last week's win against Bristol City and will be assessed.
Scott Hogan (ankle), Rushian Hepburn-Murphy and Gabriel Agbonlahor (hamstring) are all closing in on their returns, but are not expected to feature, while Leandro Bacuna sits out the third game of his six-match ban.
Opta stats
Huddersfield have not beaten Aston Villa in league competition since August 1969, drawing three and losing three of the six meetings since then.
Villa have scored just five goals in their last seven league games away at Huddersfield (0.7 per game).
Huddersfield's defeat to Newcastle at the weekend was just their second loss in their last 16 Championship fixtures (W11 D3).
Aston Villa have won three consecutive league games for the first time since April 2010; they last won four on the spin in December 2009 under Martin O'Neill.
Indeed, the Villans have kept three successive clean sheets in league competition for the first time since February 2010 (four in a row).
Prutton's prediction
I felt for Huddersfield against Newcastle. A couple of big calls went against them, especially the penalty where Nahki Wells didn't mean to clip Matt Ritchie. I fancy them to have too much pace and creativity for Villa, who will have a totally different proposition than they faced against Rotherham on Saturday.
David Prutton predicts: 2-1 (15/2 with Sky Bet)
