WATCH: PUEL REACTION
His side went close but Manchester United held on after that late Jamie Vardy goal. Here's Claude Puel...
Paul Pogba and Luke Shaw scored in each half as Manchester United ushered in the new Premier League season with a 2-1 victory over Leicester at Old Trafford.
'BEST FEELING' FOR SHAW
Luke Shaw's been talking to us pitchside after scoring his first senior goal - one that proved the winner.
"For me it’s the first one and that’s the most important. I’m
up and running now.
"For my career so far, it’s probably the best feeling I’ve
had. I want more feelings like that. That’s why you come to stadiums like this,
to teams like this, to help the team and score goals like that. It was the best
POGBA TARGETS MORE TROPHIES
"I won’t be full from a World Cup. I know it’s a great cup, it
will stay in my mind, but I want to win all the trophies. I haven’t won the
Premier League, I haven’t won the Champions League, I haven’t won the European
Championships so there are more to win."
POGBA: IT'S MY STYLE
And now, on that unconventional run-up...
"It’s my style of taking penalties, I’ve always done. I know
it’s long, it can disturb the goalkeeper, but that’s how I take it. The most important
thing is that the ball goes in, because if I miss, I know what I will hear
'IT'S ON HOW WE FEEL'
So just who was the designated penalty taker? Paul Pogba has cleared things up when speaking to Sky Sports after the game...
"We don’t really have one. The manager has names but after,
it’s how we feel. I decided to take it, I was one of the names and in the next
game, I can leave it Alexis, it’s not a problem. It is just the win that is the
"Leicester responded well to United's goal but United had the better chances and the most important thing for Manchester United was the result. I don't think it was ever going to be an amazing performance given some players have only been back a few days. They got there in the end and the Luke Shaw goal was critical given how Leicester pushed in the end."
OFF THE MARK
MAN UTD 2-1 LEICESTER
It's a late scare from Leicester as Jamie Vardy nods home from close range in added time, but Paul Pogba's early penalty and Luke Shaw's superb strike - his first senior goal - decide the opening Premier League game of the season.
An entertaining opening to the season and match highlights will be in the carousel in 15 minutes' time!
90+4: IS IT.... It's not, as the corner is whipped in, Schmeichel does get his head onto it at the near post, but it whistles past the post and that's the end of the game!
MAN UTD 2-1 LEICESTER
90+4: Here comes Kasper!! Schmeichel is up as Leicester win a corner.
They couldn't... Could they?
GOAL! MAN UTD 2-1 LEICESTER (Vardy, 90+3)
It could be on!
It's Ricardo again who lofts a lovely ball into the area, although it initially hits the crossbar. However, Vardy is there at the back post to nod the ball home right at the goal mouth, beating De Gea.
MAN UTD 2-0 LEICESTER
90+2: CHANCE! Vardy is completely unmarked in the middle of the area as Ricardo lofts a lovely ball towards the back post, but the striker sends his volley over the crossbar from point blank range.
MAN UTD 2-0 LEICESTER
90: Four minutes of added time.
89: An absolutely wonderful pass from Sanchez, sending a diagonal ball to Mata on the right flank.
However, his eventual pass just goes behind Lukaku who cannot send it home. Wonderful play from the Chilean, though.
88: Leicester are seeing plenty of the ball as the clock ticks down to full time, but can they spring a come back surprise?
84: A final United change with Pogba replaced by Fellaini. A very good evening for the captain.
GOAL! MAN UTD 2-0 LEICESTER (Shaw, 83)
It's Luke Shaw who doubles the lead and gets his first senior goal! He's had his issues at United and that one will feel good.
He makes the run down the left of the box, and he is picked out by Mata. Shaw then takes the ball around Ricardo, who is scrambling to get back, before poking the ball home from the tightest of angles to beat Schmeichel.
It's a lovely finish with players and staff alike celebrating wildly - including Mourinho.
MAN UTD 1-0 LEICESTER
82: BUNDLEEEEE!! Sanchez and Ricardo tussle in the middle of the park and end up toppling over each other into a heap before United are awarded the free kick.
80: Another Leicester change - their last of the game - with Silva replaced by Iborra.
79: How has that stayed out?!?!
Sanchez eventually gets a hold of a forward pass before slotting it across the box for Lukaku, who only has to chip the goalkeeper.
But Schmeichel is out to block the shot and send it looping onto the top of the net, but Lukaku was also offside.
MAN UTD 1-0 LEICESTER
77: Another United change as McTominay comes on for Fred.
76: SAVE!! A reaction save from De Gea!
Bailly clears an initial cross into the area from Ghezzal, which Shaw thinks he has lots of time to deal with.
Enter Vardy, who busts a gut to get across and push Shaw off the ball before racing back into the area and picking out Gray, but the latter's flick is saved by a superb fingertip effort from De Gea.
74: Some really slopping passing from both sides is creeping in now, which means we may just seen another goal before the game is out.
But for who?
72: Another poor ball from Sanchez, as he tries to slot in Lukaku in the box, but Maguire is there to cut out the pass.
69: Free kick to Leicester after a foul on Silva by Pereira, who goes into the book for his troubles.
66: First change for United as Rashford is replaced by Lukaku.
65: SHOT!! Wonderful play from Man Utd and that should be two!
It's a good steal from Bailly who slips the ball in to Pogba in the middle of the park. The captain in turn threads the ball for Sanchez on the left who powers into the box before doing very well to hold the ball up as he waits for reinforcements.
In comes Mata and Sanchez makes the pass, but his shot goes well wide of the post. Andre Marriner gives Leicester the goal kick, but Mata is incensed that it isn't a corner.
He's right, too, as it comes off a Leicester elbow on the way through.
63: Double change for Leicester as Maddison and Amartey come off and are replaced by Vardy and new signing Ghezzal, who makes his competitive Foxes debut.
62: Brilliant defending from Bailly!
Ndidi steals possession back in the middle of the park and picks out the run of Iheanacho through the middle and the striker gets onto the end of the cross. However, he is taken off the ball by the power of Bailly before the United defender hacks the ball away.
UNDER THE LIGHTS
59: Not a bad shot from Silva and he tests De Gea with a floated effort from the left of the box, but the United goalkeeper is out to palm the ball away.
58: Not the best from Sanchez at all as Rashford makes the initial move forward down the left before finding the Chilean inside the box.
However, his final pass for Mata is poor and into a sea of space, with Leicester able to clear.
56: Not a bad shot from Darmian at all! He gets himself into space at the top of the area before letting fly, sending the shot through Maguire's legs, but Schmeichel deals with it well.
54: An ambitious cross from Sanchez as he whips the ball into the area from the left-hand side, looking for Fred, but Schmeichel has the situation covered.
Fred is then put into the book for a tackle on Maddison. However, the Man Utd midfielder believes it should be Maddison in the book with both nibbling at one another.
Firey Fred, he has been nicknamed by Martin Tyler on comms!
52: OFFSIDE! nearly a big chance for Rashford and it looked like he had fluffed his lines.
A ricochet off the leg of Silva from Pogba's path puts the ball at the feet of Sanchez, who in turn lets Rashford drive at goal with the ball.
However, as he is closed down, the offside flag is correctly raised.
51: Free kick to Man Utd and the first yellow of the game for Amartey after he fouls Sanchez over on the left.
49: A big a battle between two immensely quick players on the right as Rashford tries to beat Gray and he nearly does, but a slightly nudge from the Leicester man sends Rashford tumbling.
However, Gray is over to give him a hand up and there's no hard feelings between the pair.
48: Free kick to Leicester as the marauding Chilwell is fouled over on the left, but before he can even get to his feet, the Foxes take their free kick short and quick, although little comes from it.
47: Nearly another quick start from Man Utd as Maguire gives the ball away in his own half, allowing Rashford to burst forward down the right flank.
However, his ball into the area for Sanchez is cut out by Amartey.
46: United get us back under way at Old Trafford. No changes at the break!
STAR OF THE SHOW
NEV ON 'WEIRD' RUN UP
What did Gary Neville think of Paul Pogba's slow run up?
"Weird. I was thinking ‘you’ve got to score, how are you going
to get the power into it?’ but he just lifts the ball into the upper part of
the net and goalkeepers never get them."
