VILLA'S NEXT SIX FIXTURES
And here's what Steve Bruce has had to say to Sky Sports at full-time...
"We were better but unfortunately what we've just witnessed there is us. We've done okay and then we give a poor goal away, which is typical. They're two horrible goals to lose a game against Newcastle and that's our Achilles heel at the moment.
"At the other end the three, four chances we've created, we can't take them."
CLARKE ON VILLA'S DEFENCE
Former Aston Villa assistant Steve Clarke is in the Sky Sports studio, and he's been particularly scathing of their defending for Newcastle's first goal.
He said: "They have to be more alive. They don't defend the cross well and after that it's just a scramble. There's just an element of panic. You have to die to defend your six-yard box."
RAFA PLEASED WITH WIN
Newcastle boss Rafa Benitez: "It was a difficult first half. We were pressing quite high and when we scored the goal you could see in the second half they were more open and we could play like we wanted to."
And here's how the Sky Bet Championship table looks after full-time...
NEWCASTLE 2-0 ASTON VILLA
FULL-TIME! Newcastle are back to the top of the Sky Bet Championship!
Yoan Gouffran put them in front after 42 minutes and Henri Lansbury's own goal just before the hour ended any hope of a comeback.
It wasn't a perfect night for Newcastle, though, as they saw Dwight Gayle forced off with injury on his first start for more than a month, while there were also concerns for Villa as striker Scott Hogan had to leave the pitch on a stretcher late on.
90+3: SHOT! Shelvey tries to pick out the top corner from 20 yards, but sends his effort wide.
90+1: But the fourth official's board is broken so he can't display it. Don't see that every day.
90: Hogan receives warm applause from all sides as he's taken off the pitch. Villa will play six minutes of added time with 10 men.
89: SUB! And Newcastle use the pause to make a change. Christian Atsu replaces goalscorer Yoan Gouffran.
88: The stretcher is out and we've got a break in play here. Doesn't look good for Hogan at all.
86: And this looks like more bad news for Villa... Hogan now down in the Newcastle box looking in real pain holding his ankle.
85: Villa trying to turn up the heat on Newcastle as we approach the final five minutes or so. The home side more than happy to sit back with their two-goal lead and see what they can him them with.
83: SUB! Another couple of changes for Villa as Birkir Bjarnason and Jonathan Kodjia make way for Gary Gardner and Leandro Bacuna.
82: Kodjia now down on the turf looking in pain after an aerial collision with Lascelles. An injury to him would really be a kicking a man while he's down as far as Villa are concerned.
79: OVER! Kodjia attempts the spectacular from the edge of the area, but his volleyed effort flies a long way over the bar.
76: Villa probing for a way back but Newcastle looking very comfortable with just under 15 to go. This should be a home win and a return to the top of the Sky Bet Championship.

Live Newcastle v Aston Villa odds...
71: SUB! Bruce makes a change as Albert Adomah comes on for Mile Jedinak for Villa.
70: SHOT! Now it's Colback's turn to force a save out of Johnstone, who is slowly getting busier and busier in the Villa goal.
WATCH: LANSBURY'S OWN GOAL
Hit play on the video below to see Newcastle's second...
69: CHANCE! Mitrovic up high in the box to win a header, but his effort is weak and straight at Johnstone. Couldn't get anything behind it.
67: CHANCE! Newcastle screaming for a penalty after Ritchie tumbles in the box, before Dummett forces a good stop from Johnstone at his near post.
Newcastle moving in for the kill...
66: The face says it all...
65: CHANCE! Nearly a way back for Villa as a lofted ball over the top finds Bjarnason in behind, but his attempted strike is kept out superbly by the onrushing Darlow.
62: Steve Bruce wearing the face of a man who has just had his lunch money stolen on pizza day in the school canteen. It's all going wrong for Villa again.
Newcastle fans revelling in that own goal slightly more after Lansbury's role in Nottingham Forest's win over Newcastle earlier this season. The Toon don't forget.
GOAL! NEWCASTLE 2-0 ASTON VILLA (Lansbury OG, 59)
Lascelles is the man celebrating as Newcastle go two ahead, but that's got to be a Henri Lansbury own goal. The Newcastle defender rises highest to get a header on goal from a corner, and the ball clips Lansbury on the far post, before his attempt at a clearance hits the post he's hugging before trickling over the line.
NEWCASTLE 1-0 ASTON VILLA
59: SAVE! Shelvey fizzes a shot in from a 30-yard free-kick, but Johnstone gets across his goal well for Villa to keep it out.
57: Lansbury's free-kick is headed as far as Bjarnason on the edge of the area. He has a go on the volley, but it's a wild, wild, wild attempt that flies a long way over.
54: Villa really need to get more support up to Hogan up top. The striker has looked very lonely at times in attack.
51: But Ritchie thumps it straight into the wall...
50: Hourihane maybe a little lucky to avoid a booking after going in late on Colback. Newcastle with a free-kick in a great position just over 20 yards from goal...
48: Newcastle already looking a little brighter than they did at any point in the first half. Colback tries to whip one into the box, but Villa defend it relatively well.
Back Matt Ritchie to score the next goal as a live Sky Bet Price Boost at odds enhanced from 10/1 to 11/1!

Sky Bet's Newcastle v Aston Villa Price Boosts...
HALF-TIME! Newcastle lead at the break at St James' Park. Villa probably the better side without creating too many chances, asides from a big Bjarnason miss early on, but it's Yoan Gouffran's strike which is the difference.
45+1: Two minutes of added time at the end of the first half.
45: SHOT! Ritchie wakes up for the first time tonight as he charges forward before letting loose from 20 yards, but his effort bounces wide of the Villa post.
44: Villa want a penalty after Darlow rushes out to the edge of his area and appears to bring down Hogan, but the striker is flagged for offside.
GOAL! NEWCASTLE 1-0 ASTON VILLA (Gouffran, 42)
A goal about as scrappy as the game has been so far. Newcastle take a short corner before getting it into the box and onto the head of Mitrovic. He nods it down into the danger area and eventually, after it pings around a bit, Yoan Gouffran manages to poke it home from close range.
Newcastle lead! They don't really deserve it.
NEWCASTLE 0-0 ASTON VILLA
41: Newcastle seeing a little bit more of the ball now as they try and assert some control on proceedings. They work it wide to Yedlin down the right, but his attempted cross is blocked.
38: YELLOW! Another card in quick succession for Newcastle as Lascelles is penalised for bringing down Hogan.
36: More of the game taking place in Newcastle's third at the moment. Villa will be delighted with that...
34: YELLOW! A first booking of the night for Shelvey after a bit of sarcastic applause aimed at the referee. Daft.
