Danny Rose is targeting a place in Roy Hodgson's next England squad after a "shock" invitation to a team meeting in February.
The Tottenham left-back revealed he almost missed out on last month's gathering at St George's Park because the FA had the wrong phone number for him.
Rose was a regular for England U21s and played four out of five of Great Britain's matches at the London 2012 Olympics, but despite several call-ups to the senior squad he is yet to win a senior cap.
However, he is hoping his excellent form for Mauricio Pochettino's title-chasing Spurs can win him a place for this summer's European Championship finals in France.
Rose said: "I changed my phone number last year, and the lads were talking about the meeting and I didn't know anything about it.
"The day before, the people from the FA texted me and asked me if I was coming, and I was like, 'what meeting?'
"It was a big shock for me. For other players it might have just been a meeting, but for me it was a lot more. It shows I am maybe in the plans.
"I was over the moon to be included and I think I'm in their plans, at least a little bit. Even if it is a small part, it was a big bonus.
"I'm 25 and have not made an appearance yet for my country, but that's the aim for everybody. Hopefully I can keep playing well until the next time England meet."
Rose has been rotated regularly with Ben Davies at Tottenham this season, making 21 appearances, but insists he has no issue with Pochettino's policy.
"There will be games where the gaffer thinks Ben will be able to do better than me and vice-versa," he added. "I've got no problems with it."
