Demba Ba has suffered a horrific leg break while playing for Shanghai Shenhua in the Chinese Super League, with his coach saying the injury could end his career.

The former Newcastle and Chelsea striker was playing for his side in a derby against Shanghai SIPG on Sunday but collapsed in the 63rd minute of his team's 2-1 victory after a seemingly innocuous challenge from Sun Xiang.

Ba's left leg gave way beneath the knee as he fell to the ground after appearing to get his leg tangled with his opponent's while his studs were in contact with the turf.

Shenhua coach Gregorio Manzano said he feared for Ba's career after the game following the incident.

"It could end his professional career," he said. "I would rather lose the game than lose Ba."

The 31-year-old is the top scorer in the division, with 14 goals in 18 games after moving to China from Besiktas in June 2015.

Chelsea, for whom he scored 14 goals in 51 appearances, wished their former player a speedy recovery.
