Stoke goalkeeper Jack Butland has had a second round of surgery on his right ankle - nine months after the first in March.

The 23-year-old fractured his ankle playing for England in a friendly against Germany on March 26 and attempted to return to action earlier in the season.

Butland was expected to play for the Potters' U23 side earlier this month but had to abort his return and undergo further scans with another specialist.

But the 'keeper says the root of the problem has finally been discovered and is now embarking on another schedule of rehabilitation.

"Happy to be home after spending a week away seeing another specialist, but grateful we were able to get to the bottom of my setbacks," he posted on Instagram.

"Although wanting to avoid surgery it was necessary to do so to get me back playing the game I love.

"It's been a tough and frustrating year but I can't thank everyone enough for there (sic) constant support. I'm as positive as ever and I can't wait to be back."
