Everton's Ronald Koeman says his side controlled the game and deserved a 2-0 win over Leicester

Everton manager Ronald Koeman has urged his players to now start games like they finished their 2-0 win over Leicester City on Boxing Day.

The Toffees moved up to seventh in the Premier League after beating the champions at the King Power Stadium thanks to second-half goals from Kevin Mirallas and Romelu Lukaku.

However, prior to Mirallas' 51st-minute opener, the visitors had not even had a shot on target, although that strike from the midfielder gave Everton the confidence to then go on and record a comfortable victory.

"We controlled the game from the start, but our ball possession was not that good to create, or even have shots on target," said Koeman.

"But it was much better in the second half and of course the lift we got from going 1-0 up made the team more confident and comfortable.

"So a good, important and well-deserved win because we could have killed the game with that big chance for Gana [Idrissa Gueye] earlier, but okay finally a clean sheet and three points is really good.

"We played well and had a good defensive organisation, we played with the three centre-backs against two strikers. They changed in the second half with three up front, so we changed to four at the back and it is really that organisation that you need to defend well against a strong Leicester.

"You saw in the first half it is also a question of confidence and we were more confident after going 1-0 up and then you play better football.

"So it is now a question of starting like that, more confident in the beginning of the game, and that takes time."
