Arsenal have more Twitter followers than any other club in England

Arsenal are top of the league... for Twitter followers.

Sky Sports has taken a look at Premier League clubs and their social media reach and it's the Gunners who come out on top with over 6.1m Twitter followers - more than any other football club in England.

London neighbours Chelsea are the second most-followed with 5.94m Twitter users subscribing to their posts, while Manchester United are third with 5.78m followers - more than twice the number of their local rivals Manchester City, who are fifth with 2.6m followers.

Liverpool are the fourth-most followed club in the country with 4.66m followers, while neighbours Everton - despite only registering 601k followers - are seventh. 

Several women's teams made the top 92. Arsenal Ladies were 28th, with 124k followers, Chelsea Ladies 38th with 79.3k followers and Liverpool Ladies 49th with 50.7k followers.

The only non-Premier League clubs to appear in the top 20 are Championship duo QPR in 15th (288k), and Fulham in 17th (260k).

Premier League newcomers Bournemouth have the fewest followers in the top flight with a relatively modest 75.3k.

Social success

Current Football League teams punching above their weight on social included League One clubs Wigan Athletic in 22nd (167k), Doncaster Rovers in 27th (125k) and League Two Portsmouth in 42nd (63k).

There were several non-league teams inside the top 92, including FC United of Manchester (43rd; 58.7k), Hyde (55th; 39.4k), Salford City (67th; 31.2k), Cheltenham Town (75th; 28.8k), Tranmere Rovers (83rd; 26.2k), Wrexham (85th; 24.6k) and Goole AFC (88th; 24.2k).

High and lows

League Two Morecambe FC earned the unfortunate accolade of being the least popular Football League team on the social media platform, with just 11.1k followers. 

Non-league Birmingham-based Castlecroft Rangers have sent 105k Tweets - more than any other football club in England, despite having fewer than 5,000 followers.

Of the top 92 most-followed football clubs in England, League One Scunthorpe United have posted the most Tweets with 81.9k messages, while Chelsea Ladies and York City have posted the fewest with 6,578 and 8,190, respectively.

In total, the current 92 Football League clubs have posted more than 2.78m Tweets during their Twitter lifespans to date.
