Sergio Aguero has re-iterated his intention to re-join boyhood club Independiente when his current Manchester City contract expires.

The prolific striker told a radio station in his native Argentina that he wants to return to the club where he made his debut as a 15-year-old, after his existing deal ends.

The 27-year-old, who has scored 128 goals since joining City for £38m from Atletico Madrid in 2011, agreed a new five-year contract in 2014 and the club were understood to be keen to discuss a new deal - but Aguero's comments suggest that may not happen.

He told radio station Independiente en la Uno: "It's clear that I'm going to return to Independiente and retire there. My family know that... I'm going to go there when my contract with Manchester City finishes in 2018.

"Here [at City], they know what I want to do, they know I want to return to Argentina. I'm giving you my word that I want to return to Avellaneda when I leave England. I dream of playing alongside my brothers.

"In the last few months, lots was said about my renewal but I didn't pay it any attention. I know the contract ends after the World Cup [in Russia in 2018] and I'm going back to Independiente.

"Here at City, the vibes have always been the best, they've always told me they were open [to a move] if the chance of a transfer came up. When I leave, when my contract ends, I'm off to Argentina to play for the Reds [Independiente], from Manchester straight to Avellaneda."

It is not clear why Aguero referred to his contract ending in 2018, as the club have confirmed he is contracted until 2019.

Aguero has spoken previously about returning to Independiente. He first joined the club, based in Avellaneda in the province of Buenos Aires, at the age of nine and broke into the first team at 15 before moving to Atletico in 2006.

He also admitted it was a strange situation to know that City manager Manuel Pellegrini was due to leave the club in June to be replaced by Bayern Munich coach Pep Guardiola.

"It's kind of crazy with four months to go, to know your coach is leaving and also to know who is his successor, but that's how it is," he said.

"Let's hope we can win something to give Pellegrini the best send-off and then we'll adapt to what Pep Guardiola wants [of us]."
