Crystal Palace are in talks to sign one of two strikers - Preston's Jordan Hugill or FC Midtjylland's Alexander Sorloth - ahead of the transfer deadline, Sky Sports News understands.
It is believed Palace have made an offer to sign Hugill but it has fallen some way short of Preston's valuation.
The Championship club are understood to have turned down an offer of around £8m in August, so it is expected Preston's valuation will be some way higher this month.
Sky Sports News understands Palace are also in talks with Danish club Midtjylland over Norway international Sorloth.
Palace's budget for a striker this month has been between £10m and 12m. They had been trying to sign Khouma Babacar from Fiorentina and considered a move for Ashley Barnes.
The Eagles have been unable to reach an agreement with Fiorentina and manager Roy Hodgson publicly ruled out a move for the Burnley forward on Monday.
