Guus Hiddink admits it is difficult to say which way John Terry's contract situation will go, but is hopeful of a positive outcome.
The Chelsea captain, 35, is suspended for the remainder of the season, meaning there is a chance he will not play for the club again, with his current contract set to expire in the summer.
Terry, a one-club man, has made more than 700 appearances for Chelsea, but his future remains up in the air ahead of the arrival of new head coach Antonio Conte.
Chelsea supporters showed their support for Terry during the 1-1 draw at Liverpool on Wednesday night, with a number holding up placards demanding he is offered a new contract.
Terry, who has expressed his desire to stay at Stamford Bridge, remains in talks with Chelsea and Hiddink is optimistic that there can be a positive outcome.
"Let's wait to see what happens in the upcoming days on this issue," the Chelsea interim manager said.
"Of course John is in contact every day with us and he has made such a long career that the fans appreciate him highly.
"We will see regarding his near future, let's wait a bit.
"Hopefully both are wise parties and let's hope for the best. It is difficult to see which direction it is going."
