Skipper Harry Wilson expects a typically robust affair when Liverpool's U23s face Everton in this weekend's mini-derby.

Top-of-the table Everton are four points clear of city rivals Liverpool ahead of Sunday's derby at Prenton Park and are averaging three goals a game in Premier League 2 this season.

"It's an extra special game, especially if you win," Wilson told Sky Sports.

"I've been here for 10 years now so I know what the rivalry is like around the city. Some of us are friends off the pitch but as soon as that whistle goes all the friendships are put to one side.

"The first tackle, the first header, the first goal - they are all important because they set the tone for the game.

"Everton are scoring goals at will at the moment and it will be up to us to stop them. We feel we have the ability to do that, and then it's up to us to get one going the other way. But we are on a good run and hopefully we can continue that this weekend."

Wilson, who three years ago broke Gareth Bale's record to become Wales' youngest ever international, was made U23s captain by boss Michael Beale after an injury-plagued campaign last season.

The 19-year-old has repaid his manager's faith, notching three goals in six league games this term, including an audacious flick in Tuesday's 1-1 draw with Manchester United.

"The finish [against United] was just pure instinct," Wilson said.

"Pedro Chirivella had a shot and I wasn't sure if it was going in. The flick was just a reaction and I was delighted when I saw it go in.

"After missing so much football last season, I felt it was important for me to start well this season, which I feel I have done, so I'm hoping the goals and assists will keep coming.

"I've found the captaincy really helpful and beneficial. It's given me a lot of extra responsibility but it's a responsibility I'm enjoying at the minute."
