Jurgen Klopp is not surprised that Steven Gerrard has been linked with managing Rangers and says if he was an owner he would be interested in hiring him

Steven Gerrard is a contender to become the next manager of Rangers, Sky Sports News understands.

Initial talks have been held between the Liverpool academy coach and the Ibrox hierarchy over the former England captain potentially replacing Graeme Murty.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp says he does not have any news on the Gerrard situation, but says the 37-year-old will have the club's support if he moves on.

"I am not worried," said Klopp. "Because if - a big if - something happens, the club was always clear that Steven was, is, and will ever, be a Liverpool legend.

"So whatever he wants to do, we support him in that, it is as easy as that. I don't know the situation at the moment and no one told me anything about it.

"I can imagine clubs are interested in signing Stevie, (he has) massive experience as a player, and I would think about him as well if I owned a club.

"One day it will happen, either here or somewhere else.

"It is his decision and he is old enough to decide things like that. The only thing I can say is we will support him in all directions."

If Gerrard does take charge at Ibrox, he will find himself up against Brendan Rodgers, one of his former managers at Liverpool, who is currently chasing a second successive domestic treble with Celtic.

Murty took over as interim Rangers boss in October and was given the job until the end of the season in December.

Rangers are second in the Premiership table, ahead of Aberdeen on goal difference, but a recent 4-0 Scottish Cup semi-final loss to Celtic damaged Murty's prospects of landing the job on a permanent basis.
