Greg Docherty admits he would love to learn from someone like Steven Gerrard but is fully focused on Rangers’ Old Firm clash with Celtic under the current management team.
Sky Sports News understands that Gerrard is a contender to become the next manager at Ibrox, with initial talks having been held between the Liverpool academy coach and Rangers hierarchy.
Graeme Murty took over as interim Rangers boss in October following the sacking of Pedro Caixinha and was given the job until the end of the season in December. Docherty joined his boyhood club from Hamilton in January and has made 13 appearances under Murty.
Asked if Gerrard was someone he looked up to growing up, the 21-year-old midfielder admitted he was, but stressed that the Rangers players are just focused on the Old Firm derby at Celtic Park, live on Sky Sports, on Sunday.
"Of course, it's Steven Gerrard, he is a renowned name in world football and he's a midfielder, I'd love to be able to play like him and if I could learn from someone like that it would be great," he told Sky Sports News.
"For me, if he is to come in, then fantastic, but we have got a good managerial staff here. The coaching staff are great and, as players, we focus on the weekend."
He added: "Here at Rangers there are names linked all the time, of course Steven Gerrard is a big name but I think it would be disrespectful for us as players to come out and talk about it.
"We focus on the pitch and let the guys above us focus on whoever is going to be in charge next year and we will deal with the task in hand, the football side, and the guys above us can deal with the coaching staff and managerial side."
