Roberto Firmino allows Liverpool to be flexible, says Phil Thompson

Phil Thompson believes Roberto Firmino will allow Liverpool to be more flexible next season, and insists Brendan Rodgers' side has been improved this summer.

Brazilian Firmino signed from Hoffenheim for an initial £21.3m in July, one of seven summer recruits as Liverpool eye a return to the Champions League.

Nathaniel Clyne, Christian Benteke, Danny Ings, James Milner, Alan Bogdan and Joe Gomez have also joined, while Raheem Sterling has left for Manchester City.

And Firmino, who played on either wing, in attacking midfield or as a second striker at Hoffenheim, could be the pick of the bunch, according to Thompson.

He told Sky Sports: “I think there has been a great improvement, Rodgers has identified areas we needed to strengthen, and I think Firmino will be that attacking player to excite the crowd and get the goals from midfield.

"Sterling could play in quite a few positions, but Firmino now gives them that option.

"From what we know he has the ability to play wide, good ability to beat people (and has) assists and goals in his play from midfield.

After coming so close to winning the title in 2013/14, Liverpool fell eight points short of fourth place last term, Rodgers’ third in charge.

And Thompson believes this summer’s business has been similar to last year, but insists the way the new players gel could be the key to future success.

He said: "This time last year we were more than happy with the signings but we did not hit the ground running.

"Some of the individuals we signed were very good, well sought-after, and it's the same again this summer.

"But I don't think there are going to be anymore signings. I would be massively surprised if we bring anyone else in."
