Tottenham are closing in on the signing of young Argentinian centre-back Juan Foyth, according to Sky sources.

Sky Sports News HQ understands Spurs are currently in talks with the Estudiantes president - the former Chelsea and Manchester United star Juan Sebastian Veron - over a deal worth in the region of £8m for the 19-year-old.

Veron, who was an Argentina team-mate of Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino, is understood to have been in London over the past few days and the player has said he is keen on making the move to Europe.

Should an agreement be finalised, Foyth's move would be subject to obtaining a work permit.

Foyth was quoted last week saying he had read on social media that Spurs were interested but had not had confirmation from his agent, but the youngster has since been quoted by an Argentinian newspaper stating he was aware of negotiations.

The La Plata-born defender is expected go straight into Spurs' U23 group and become an understudy to Toby Alderweireld, to whom he is similar in stature and style.

Tottenham have been in the market for a centre-back with the future of Kevin Wimmer uncertain. The Austria international admitted last week that he was thinking of leaving the club and Sky sources understand Spurs are prepared to let him go for the right fee.
