Aston Villa defender Philippe Senderos hopes he can return to Switzerland in the January transfer window, as he looks for regular football again.

The former Arsenal centre-half has not played for Villa for 14 months after he was left out of the 25-man Premier League squad by ex-manager Tim Sherwood.

Senderos, who has been capped 55 times by Switzerland, fears he will be left out of his country's squad for Euro 2016 as a result.

The 30-year-old said: "Maybe the Swiss Super League is the ideal solution for me. I'll try anything as I want to play matches again.

"I know I still have several good years ahead of me. I've not been able to do what I enjoy the most, I miss the pleasure of battles on the pitch, and it is frustrating."

Senderos, who is out of contract at Villa Park at the end of the season, spent seven years at Arsenal and has also played for Everton, Fulham, AC Milan and Valencia.

"I haven't forgotten how to play," Senderos said. "Clubs just need to look at who I've played for in the past, I have lots of experience.

"I need to be playing regularly once more to think about getting a national call-up. Others deserve to be in the team more than me at the moment."
