Newcastle United winger Florian Thauvin has returned to Marseille on loan until the end of the season.

The 23-year-old arrived on Tyneside from the French club last August, but heads back to the Stade Velodrome barely five months after arriving in the Premier League for £12m.

Newcastle boss Steve McClaren called Thauvin "one of the best young players in Europe" back in August, but he has struggled to adapt to life in England.

This month's arrival of Andros Townsend from Tottenham pushed him further away from the first-team picture.

A club statement said: "There is no option for purchase within the deal, so Thauvin will return to Newcastle at the end of the loan."
