Andros Townsend's potential return to Newcastle from Crystal Palace is off, according to Sky sources.

It is understood that Rafa Benitez was hopeful the transfer would been pushed through on Deadline Day but an agreement could not be reached on the finances of the deal, which would have been a loan move with a view to a permanent transfer.

Townsend initially joined Newcastle from Tottenham in a £12m deal in January 2016 but, despite some impressive performances, could not stop the St James' Park side from being relegated to the Sky Bet Championship.

The 25-year-old then joined the Eagles in a £13m deal during the summer and has made 25 appearances for Palace this season, scoring one goal.
