Middlesbrough manager Aitor Karanka says the club are “very close” to sealing the signing of Athletic Bilbao striker Enrique Sola.
The 29-year-old is in the north east for a medical ahead of a loan move until the end of the season.
"We are close," said Karanka. "He is a player who can bring us something different. He can play as a striker or a second striker.
"He can be really good because he can bring us something we don't have."
Karanka added it was unlikely any deal for Sola would be completed in time for Saturday's game at Bristol City.
Sola joined Athletic Bilbao in 2013 from Osasuna but has struggled to win a regular place in Ernesto Valverde's team.
Karanka was also asked about the potential arrival of Benfica's Victor Lindelof, but was keen to remain tight-lipped on the subject.
"There's nothing close," he said. "He's a player on the list."
The Swedish U21 international can play in central defence or as a defensive midfielder.
