Former West Ham midfielder Kevin Nolan has turned down the chance to play for a French Ligue 1 club, according to Sky sources.

Sky Sports understands Nolan, who was released in the summer after four years with the Hammers, rejected the offer of a contract after two weeks of negotiations.

It is believed the move fell through because the 33-year-old did not feel it was right for him or his family.

Nolan is training with League Two Leyton Orient - managed by former West Ham assistant Ian Hendon - to maintain his fitness.

The former Bolton and Newcastle captain is determined to win a contract at a Premier League club and newspapers have reported interest from Sunderland and Bournemouth, but no deal has materialised.

Last month Orient boss Hendon praised Nolan and said it was a delight to have such an influential player around his squad.

He said: "It is great to have such a model professional in Kevin at the club, and I am more than happy for Kevin to come in and train with the squad.

"It is good for our players to be training with a vastly experienced and talented Premier League midfielder."

Nolan made over 150 appearances for West Ham between 2011 and 2015, scoring 31 goals.
